One of the better days Shore Thing Charters has had in company history! First off, wanted to congratulate Capt Kyle and his crew(John, Gordon, Ross an Abel) on the first legal cobia brought in a very long time. Great job boys! Capt Mike used to bring a few in years ago, but it has been years since.
Flat calm day and the fish was hungry. All the Okuma rods and reels on our boats got a thorough work out today. I had my good friend, and best corporate customer, Jimmy Marlowe with JEM Mechanical out of Waveland MS. Jimmy brought Henry Martinez of GMR along for the ride, and to be his punching bag for jokes. We made quick work of the run to the LA Marsh.Weather has just been perfect, just seems to make a good day of fishing that much better. We set up shop on a flock of birds in 4 feet of water over shells. Stayed hooked up on every cast and put number 75 in the box at 7:50 AM! Every single fish was caught on soft plastics under a Marsh Works Popping cork. Jimmy would have stopped at 25 and been thrilled. Henry wanted to keep going and I was not going to turn down some more fish to bring home. Plus, I broke so much crap at Mr Henry's house in High School with his middle son Peter I was almost obligated to stay. Did not see any triple tail on the way in, but made it home for 9AM. Mr Henry helped me clean fish and we were done in record time.
Kyle and Kenny had a bachelor party with the Ross Muirhead group. The 8 man two boat crew did a number on everything that swims. Kyles boat was the one that caught the cobia, still can't get over that one. He had to sling that fish in the boat with a boga grip. I talked to Kenny and he had 73 really big trout. Judging from the pics he sent, Kyle had about the same or maybe more. Either way, looked to be one heck of a bachelor party.
Capt Matt was out as well, did not get to chat with him much, but heard back at the dock he slammed the big trout yet again. Sure his report will be up here or on the Shore Thing website(reports) soon.
I was supposed to have an afternoon trip today, but since we got in so early, it became a late morning trip. Shore Thing regular Nathan Guice wanted to bring his kids(Tyler, Sidney, and Deacon) for a quick outing. I tried to talk him into a near shore trip, but after he heard the morning report and saw the weather, we were headed south, back to the Marsh. I could hear Kyle and Kenny chatting on the VHF so I called in a big favor. I asked for anywhere I could find fish where the hoarse flies would not be bad. Capt Kenny came through in a big way, and gave us the keys to the castle. Kennys crew had just left em biting. He said all the trout were big, and that's why they made bug spray. We used his info to set up over some oysters with live shrimp and hit pay dirt. Got bit every cast for almost two hours with the biggest trout to grace my fish box this year. Nathans kids have been on a boat or two in their day, so it was a lot of fun. We just took turns baiting and casting for the young guns and told them to hang on. It was usually them saying 'I got one' or 'can I hold the fish' till they said uncle. Those kids will never forget that day of fishing, and it would not have been possible without the help of Capt Kenny. So, Thanks Kenny!
None of the boats saw triple tail today, no theories there, it was picture perfect. Nathan helped me clean fish in the afternoon, twice in one day, I could get used to that. The kids had more fun feeding the seagulls the guts than catching the fish I think. Long day, but a very very fun one.
