Catch Mississippi Gulf Coast trout when they’re on the move this month.

On the move - November puts Gulf Coast gamefish on the move, and anglers can learn to intercept them

Guide Ronnie Daniels knows November to be a fickle, feast-or-famine fishing month on the waters of and connected to the Gulf of Mexico, off Mississippi’s coast.

Many coastal anglers are probably familiar with Matrix Shad soft-plastic paddletail lures and how deadly they are when jigging for speckled trout.

Patrick McDowell of Slidell holds a 4-pound speckled trout caught Friday just south of Cat Island in the Mississippi Sound. Notice the slick in the photo behind McDowell. The slick popped up on a grass bed in 2.5 feet of water and it was full of bait and trout.

Capt. Tommy Sutton was idling down a break line off the south shore of Cat Island Friday, about 8 miles across the Mississippi Sound due south of Pass Christian.

Finding big “gator-sized” trout usually produces a malady called yellow-mouth fever, which can certainly be addictive.

Columbia native Tommy Sutton had his 21-foot bay boat racing across the Mississippi Sound, bouncing on the occasional waves, which often caught the captain by surprise.

Sammy Romano, left, and Cabot Corso enjoyed an epic day in the surf at Elmer’s Island last April, catching limits of specks using suspended jerkbaits.

    Gearing up for the surf

For many trout anglers, the thought of abandoning a perfectly good boat to get down and dirty with specks in the surf is sheer lunacy.

    Trout are always on topic

Alot of conversations on the Gulf Coast start with “Where’s the trout?” It’s a fun way to kick off a conversation, and everyone knows some tall tales are about to be spun. The truth typically comes out somewhere in the mix of boasting and sandbagging.

Slowing the fall of your bait and focusing on flats during warm days will result in speckled trout bites this month.

Slow lure fall key to February specks

If we experience a string of a few warmer days in February — which seems pretty likely this winter — Capt. Kris Robert will take advantage of the bump in water temperature to capitalize on speckled trout that have moved up to the flats.

Good electronics and a trolling motor with the anchor feature are invaluable tools to use at areas like Katrina Reef to catch quality speckled trout.

    Dream boat

If someone tells you you don’t need a trolling motor on your boat, stop talking to that person — you don’t need that kind of negativity in your life.

I had an idea of what I wanted for an inshore boat when I started my saltwater journey a little more than five years ago.

Mississippi's Commission on Marine Resources on Tuesday rescinded an earlier decision that would have closed the season on speckled trout Jan. 1-March 31 2017, virtually eliminating the winter season when fish are inshore.

    Commission voids speck season closure

In a surprise move, and two days prior to a public hearing on speckled trout, the Mississippi Commission on Marine Resources voted 4-1 on Tuesday in Pascagoula to rescind a three-month closure on specks in 2017.

The decision negates a vote held at the Commission’s October meeting that would have closed Mississippi’s coastal waters to recreational speckled trout fishing from Jan. 1 to March 31 next year.

Speck fishing closure proposed for January through March

In a surprise move, Mississippi’s Commission of Marine Resources announced it's intent to implement a three-month recreational closure of trout fishing at their monthly meeting today, according to a Gulfport angler who attended the meeting.

“The closure shocked the crap out of me,” Alex Smith told Mississippi Sportsman. “It came out of the blue; a commissioner just proposed it, and it was approved.

“There was no comment. I think people were just shocked.”

Biologists say speckled trout are over-fished and that the species is no longer capable of sustaining the population without tighter fishing restrictions.

    Tighter speck limits ‘coming’

Mississippi is headed for a reduction in its speckled trout limits, and changes in both the daily creel and the allowable length on the popular game fish could soon be enacted.

“It’s coming,” said Department of Marine Resources (DMR) executive director Jamie Miller, “if not at the September meeting, then October. Everything is on the table — size limits, slot limits, bag limits and even season closures.”
