• Hog Hunting

Rebecca McFarland Brewer proves that a bow can be lethal on hogs. This was her first hog, but she has since killed others with both guns and bows.

Enemy at the Gate — Wild hogs threatening public-lands hunting

There is an enemy at our gate, an eco-terrorist that is attacking what we hold dear. This is not a hollow threat, nor a pseudo –humorous jab at Zombie Apocalypse.

When a hog attacks, the result is often a trip to the hospital to have a wound dressed and stitched up.

    Video: When wild hogs attack

Hunting is often described by the unitiated as an act perpetrated on innocent animals. And, well, we do hide in trees and wait for deer to meander into our sights. Fun and productive, but it's not all that dangerous to the hunter, unless he happens to fall from his perch.

And then there's hog hunting. Unless you are lucky enough to be in a tree when a hog walks out, you just never know what will happen — as this video so aptly shows.

Hunting rifles are generally capable of taking out hogs, but the AR platform also can be deadly.

    Porker pokers

Where did the idea come from that wild hogs are easy to kill? You ever try on purpose to drive a nail into a steel-belted tire with a hammer? Just be careful that hammer doesn’t slap you back in the face.

This illustration gives a little insight into what happens often enough when a less-than-tough bullet hits the gristle-belted panel of a hyped-up wild pig.

Brandon fireman Michael Nichols with the estimated 400-pound plus wild hog sow he killed in December in Hinds County.

This 400-pound pig is no boar

Two things you need to know about the giant, probably 400-pound-plus hog that Michael Nichols of Brandon killed back in early December near Raymond in Hinds County.

First, it’s a sow. Yep, that’s right. That pig in that picture is not a boar hog. It’s a sow, a fact that wasn’t discovered until it was dead.

Second, the best part of the story is not the killing, but the recovery and retrieval of the big porcine hulk.

Once pigs become pressured by hunters and trappers they become nocturnal, as is evidenced by this night photo.

    Homemade hog bait

Florence hunter Tommy Hemphill has concocted a bait of corn, beer and raspberry gelatin that hogs on his property never seem to tire of eating. He makes his special concoction by mixing beer and corn in a five-gallon bucket and allowing fermentation to take place for a day or two. Then he puts in the gelatin and pours the finished product into a hole about a foot deep.

Damage to the grounds of the Vicksburg National Military Park occurred as high-water forced feral hogs to higher ground. The damage shown here was done in one evening. Aggressive trapping and shooting by Park personnel stopped the destruction.

Wild hogs are tough, dangerous customers

Tommy Hemphill is one of two hunters interviewed for this article that have been charged by a wounded hog. It was not a pleasant experience.

Wild hogs are on the increase across the country. Experts say 60-70-percent must be killed each year to maintain current numbers.

When hogs attack — Tips for controlling wild hog populations

With the morning light decorating the tops of the tallest trees,  a big doe stepped into the food plot and nibbled at a fresh stand of clover. Soon, a pair of yearlings joined the doe, and then more made their way to the area.

    The Warden

    The Warden

The Warden from Sportsman’s Communications is a remote trap monitor that sends a satellite-based message to the owner via email and/or text that the trap has been sprung. The notification even includes the trap location and the time it was triggered. This small battery powered device is inexpensive to purchase, easy to install and saves time in monitoring. A magnetic sensor cable and mounting bracket are included.

Hog Wild — Tips for hunting Mississippi’s wild hogs

Spreading faster than melted butter and wrecking havoc on both public and private land habitats, the wild hog situation is getting out of hand in many regions of the state. Landowners and state wildlife managers alike are working hard at trapping and hunting these destructive, prolific beasts, but are we losing ground against their ever-expanding populations? It’s definitely going to be an uphill battle.

Hunting hogs at night is a great way to put a serious hurt on the local hog population.

Crop fields best for night vision hog hunting

If you’ve got your own hog problem, Adam Lee said it may or may not be a wise choice to do a little night-vision hog hunting.

The .454 Casull is a bear to shoot, even through the barrel of a big Super Redhawk.

    A big-bore revolver hog hunt

I was sitting on an East Texas pipeline, cradling my 7 1/2-inch Ruger Super Redhawk in my lap, watching a pile of corn that had been scattered about the area and trampled with hundreds of hog tracks.

My hand cannon was stuffed with 335-grain hard-cast bullets in .454 Casull, a potent enough load in itself, but this went the extra step. These rounds were manufactured by Cor-Bon — a company that found its niche in the ammunition market by producing ammo that pushed the envelope.

Rebecca Brewer made her first bow kill of the 2011 hunting season with a lethal shot on this feral hog at Curve Mountain Hunting Club near Porterville.

    Nature’s Vacuum Cleaner

A serious dog man will sink thousands of dollars into the right hound. Coon hunters are especially proud of good bloodlines, and go to great measures to protect their hounds. Micro-chip implants, ear tattoos, GPS tracking collars, food, vaccinations and the like become a huge investment. So when a hound gets injured for any reason, it becomes a big deal.

While a party of coon hunters was listening to “The Music of the Night” on Tallahala WMA in 2011, they heard a little more than the typical ruckus a hound may have with a raccoon. The fight was more serious. One hound was in a tangle with a wild hog. This hunter and his hound were lucky. They were able to get to veterinarian Dr. Mike Walker of Forest to get the gash in the hound’s shoulder sewn closed.

Willow Break hunters Ben Boteler and T.J. Pennick devised a lethal stalk hunting tactic along the Yazoo River levees of their club.

    De-Hog Your Deer Club

Ben Boteler was spending his Saturday afternoon in January the way he does most Saturdays. He was in a deer stand on his hunt club at Willow Break located near the town of Redmon in Southwest Mississippi. The 3,800-acre club borders the Yazoo River and offers prime habitat for big deer.

Many hunters shoot hogs incidentally while targeting deer, but they’re actually a blast to hunt.<br />

Wild hogs — our other big game

What was supposed to be a non-typical deer hunt quickly turned into something completely different. Non-typical because we were hunting with handguns in the pursuit of a bit more challenge than the usual shoulder-mounted deer rifle and big-end scope. Turns out for a few minutes another quarry in the woods may have been stalking us.

Brandon hunter, Alec Taylor, with a 350-pound hog he shot in Adams County. It took three shots, the last two of which were at point blank range with a .30-06 in thick brush, to finish off this boar.

Biology and physiology of wild hogs

Male wild boar are typically 4-5 feet in length and stand approximately 2 1/2 feet high at the shoulders.
