The advice of most land managers is to shoot dove, and/or teal, when you have them on your property. Don’t wait until another day. Saving them could mean losing them, if they decide to move on.

Shoot teal, doves while you can

To take advantage of September’s Delta double of dove and blue-winged teal hunting on the same day, it is necessary to create proper habitat for the two different species of migratory birds.

The fast-migrating blue-winged teal give duck hunters a taste of action in September, and a taste of, perhaps, duck and andouille gumbo.

Lead for doves, not for teal

Hunters who try for a September Delta double need to avoid one mistake that could cost them a lot of money and a day in front of a magistrate

Mississippi's teal season opens on Saturday, and thanks to last weekend's surprise cool snap there's already blue wings in the Delta.

    Teal season opens Saturday

Last Saturday, first day of dove season, just as it gets light enough to see across the Delta, I spotted movement in the sky to the west. Three black dots were cruising above the corn, getting larger by the second.

Canada geese, like this one at Barnett Reservoir, will have to keep an eye out for hunters Sept. 1-15, during the special early statewide Canada season that allows sportsmen a chance at the resident birds.

    Early Canada goose season open

Mississippi’s first true hunting season opened Thursday, but apparently not very many sportsmen cared.

Bad news for September blue-wing teal hunters — the early migrating birds have shown a 22 percent loss in population over the past year.

    Duck numbers slightly down

Despite a 21 percent loss of nesting wetland habitat in the breeding grounds, the breeding duck population estimate of 48.4 million ducks remains well above the long-term average.

Mississippi's 2016-17 migratory bird seasons were proposed on April 20, months ahead of previous years. That includes doves, ducks and geese.

    Commission proposes migratory bird seasons

Thanks to a change in the process the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service uses in establishing migratory bird seasons, Mississippi officials were able to propose the 2016-17 dove and waterfowl seasons at last Wednesday’s meeting of the Wildlife, Fisheries and Park Commission.

    Saturday is youth duck day

Duck season returns Saturday for one more day of hunting, and while shooting is limited to hunters aged 15 and under, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks encourages participation by licensed adults.

Follow these pre-taxidermy steps and you’ll have a memory worth reliving as well as a trophy to show off to others.

Taxidermy do’s and don’ts for ducks

As both a hard-core duck hunter and an award-winning taxidermist, Shane Candler understands the importance of reliving the memory of the hunt, especially when it comes to mounting that first-ever species or trophy from the hunt of a lifetime.

Many waterfowl hunters are shunning electronic motion decoys for old school jerk cord tactics to put movement in the decoy spread.

It’s OK to jerk a duck decoy

A lifelike decoy spread is often the key difference between a limit of ducks at the end of the day or going home wanting.

Duck guide Rusty Shaw and his party of hunters display a successful day’s hunting in the Delta.

Don’t overlook steams, creeks and small rivers for duck-hunting hotspots

The Mississippi Delta is blessed with an abundance of smaller rivers and creeks that wind their way across the area before dumping into larger flows that wind up in the Mississippi River. These waterways provide plenty of waterfowl resting and feeding grounds to both resident populations and those making southerly migrations.

With a record number of ducks expected in the migration, duck hunters in the Mississippi Delta will have a lot to smile about this season.

Kenny Blakeney’s dog Gator displays his passion while retrieving a duck during an early morning delta duck hunt.

Delta doubleheader — Duck hunting in the morning plus deer hunting in the evenings

Whistling wings buzzed directly overhead an instant before a flock of ducks suddenly crashed into our decoy spread in the pre-dawn darkness. An old lone Susie who was now swimming amongst the decoys called out to a group of mallards flying overhead.

At Cole Lake Hunting Club near Isola, where hunters can choose fields or timber, a typical Saturday hunt can fill a camera lens with guys and ducks.

    Why you shouldn’t overpressure ducks

For years, Lee Benoist and a group of friends depended on one duck hole in the Delta to provide them a winter filled with shooting.
