An often-overlooked hunting opportunity is the early Sept. 1-15 season for resident Canada geese.

    Early migratory bird seasons

They may be part of the migratory bird hunting season structure, but two of the three September migratory seasons put resident doves and Canada geese in serious jeopardy.

    Gatortail Mod v series

    Gatortail Mod v series

While Gatortail made its name in the shallow water market, they now have a series that caters to open water and tight timber performance. The Mod V Series boasts a pointed bow and v-shaped front into its hull which allows for a bit more comfort when crossing open water and choppy seas. The Mod V also still performs in shallow water and mud and pairs wonderfully with Gatortail’s 37HP EFI Engine. This series is a great option for the serious duck hunter who wants to use his surface drive boat to double up as a fishing boat as well.

When a flight of snow geese heads to the decoys, hunters come up out of their layout blinds with guns blazing and birds falling.

Snow days — Best bets for the goose conservation season

The geese were so high that I doubted our decoy spread and our loud electronic caller would pull those high-flying birds down to the ground within shooting range. But as the day wore on, I learned how wrong I could be.

It takes a lot of gas in the truck and boat to keep abreast of areas ducks are using throughout the season because migrations, weather, and hunting pressure keep them on the move.

You don’t have to wait to get home or to the camp before breasting out ducks, if you know this trick.

    How to field-breast ducks

In the right situation, snipe can be found in wetland habitat in sufficient numbers for a fun shoot and, later, great meals.

Snipe hunting is for real — and it’s fun

If you think ducks, geese and doves are the only migratory birds to hunt in winter, you couldn’t be more wrong.

Regardless of the weather conditions in the Delta, cold weather from Canada to Memphis should push plenty of ducks into the Mississippi Delta this season.

    Looking for a repeat — 2017 duck-hunting forecast

Farmers and duck hunters are well known for lamenting the weather forecast, which makes it doubly tough on Steve Prather of Leland.

He is both a farmer and an avid duck hunter — a guide, as a matter of fact, for Mississippi Delta Hunters.

Delta duck hunters with the ability to pump water will have the advantage again when the second three-day weekend season opens Friday (Dec. 2-4). Their dogs may have some more ducks to retrieve.

Second brief duck season opens today

Normally, a three-inch rain similar to the one that hit Mississippi on Monday and Tuesday this week would have a dramatic impact on duck habitat in the Delta.

Gumbo mud caked on his boots prevented Jay Gunn from moonwalking after retrieving a double double in the 2015-16 season.

Christmas goose — How to kill Mississippi Delta geese

December is all about the jingle.

For some, it’s the money, leaving and/or filling their pockets. Still others cherish the sounds of the Christmas season.

For serious waterfowlers, like Jay Gunn, it’s that familiar sound that emanates from the waterfowl blind when the duck and goose bands on his call lanyard come in contact to make a kind of music only hunters can appreciate.
