Concealed on campus will reduce killings
July 2009
The Louisiana House of Representatives recently killed a bill to allow concealed handgun carry on campuses. The following is one man’s opinion:

Remington's new VTR has a patented triangular barrel and an injection-molded composite stock featuring “breather” holes to speed heat dissipation. The new triangular design of the barrel enhances stiffness while reducing weight over a round barrel of equal diameter. Remington 700 VTR the tacti-coolest yet

Many riflemen will tell you if there is one company that knows how to get it right, it is Remington. The frequent comment heard is “Remington shoots straight, straight out of the box.”

If the Department of Defense had not backed down, the price of ammunition would have skyrocketed. DOD changes course on military brass sale
May 2009
Unless you’ve been shooting from your own personal ammo dump over the last year, you’re aware of the acute shortage of sporting ammunition available to shooters across the U.S.

From 15 yards, the match barrel lived up to its reputation. A ragged hole less than 2 inches in diameter was fired by the author. Twelve rounds went into the same hole, and if the author's eyes were younger, the group would have undoubtedly been much tighter. Springfield XDm melds into shooter’s hand
April 2009
Springfield Armory, famous for high-end 1911-style pistols, introduced a new model polymer pistol in 2001 that so completely overshadowed its production of those models, the company image was taken over by the new pistol.

Citizens are flocking to buy guns and qualify for concealed-carry permits. Election drives gun sales, carry applications
March 2009
Since the recent presidential election, sales of AR-15-style rifles have gone off the charts, and some manufacturers now report backlog orders for their rifles to number in the thousands. The term “assault rifle” will not be used here since that is a misnomer.

The Alpen Apex in 3.5-10x50 is only 12.5 inches in length, which allows it to fit well on new compact rifles designed to digest the short magnum cartridges that are all the rage. Inexpensive scopes offer high quality
February 2009
If you shoot and hunt with one of the new compact magnum cartridges, smaller, lower-powered scopes cosmetically match your rifle better.

An early Model 61 S&W .22 pocket pistol is shown here on top of a new Federal Form 4473. A transfer of a firearm from a licensed dealer to any recipient requires this form. The form is filled out, and the information on the recipient is called in on an FBI NICS check. Registration not a fact of gun purchase
January 2009
In the last 30 days, I have fielded six questions from people who have either bought a gun from an individual, inherited a gun or were given a gun by someone.

Mike Mattly demonstrates a Knight KP-1 “Wurfflein” rifle to LOWA members. Chambered in .45-70, both the round and the design of the rifle were in use before 1900, which qualifies it for use in both Louisiana and Mississippi’s primitive-weapons seasons for deer. ‘Primitive’ Knight KP-1 of exceptional quality

The Southern Shooting Center is located on Highway 3185 just outside of Thibodaux, La., and offers up to 300-yard rifle ranges and 30 cemented benches.

The Optima Elite break-action rifle in .45-70 is everything it’s advertised to be and more. It’s pictured with Hornady LeveRevolution ammunition. Optima Elite .45-70 will ‘wallop’ deer

The late, great Robert Ruark wrote for many of the big outdoor mags in the 1950s and ’60s, and began a series of columns that would become one of the all-time hunting classics, entitled “The Old Man and the Boy.”

This polished carbon steel pipe was sprayed with heavy salt content water for 60 hours. The left side, which was left “in the white,” had serious corrosion that will result in pitting of the surface. The right side was coated with the revolutionary new Smith & Wesson Protectant and Lubricant only once before beginning the test.
New protectant perfect for duck marsh
September 2008
With teal season beginning this month, and the full-fledged duck season only a month or so behind it, the annual trek to the salt marshes of our coastline will begin. And thus again will begin the annual battle of all waterfowlers, the fight against rust.

Before the Heller ruling, handgun ownership was illegal in the District of Columbia.
Heller opens a welcome can of worms
August 2008
If you are a firearms enthusiast, by now you have heard of the decision by the Supreme Court of the United States on June 26 in the Heller case.

Naturally, you can’t clean this rifle from the chamber end, and cleaning with rods and implements from the muzzle can damage the crown and lands where the bullet leaves the barrel. A great solution to this problem is the Hoppe’s BoreSnake, which has better cleaning properties than either brushes or patches. Once-a-year cleaning all that’s necessary
March 2008
Each year I wonder how many sportsmen drag a firearm out of the closet in anticipation of the upcoming season, and find a patina of rust on the barrel or receiver, or worse, patches of rust that have actually eaten into the finish and marred it.

If you’re legally carrying your firearm, law-enforcement authorities have no right to seize it during a traffic stop. You don’t lose gun rights in traffic stop
February 2008
“Do I look like a thug?”

The bullets were Federal Fusion, .270 Winchester Short Magnum in 150-grain weight. This is a ½-inch, 100-yard group. Firing a group like this at 100 yards is exceptional from a rifle that allows interchangeable barrels. Merkel KR-1 approaches the ultimate
January 2008
The hottest news in rifles as we approached and entered the 21st century was the proliferation of “short-fat” cartridges, and rifles to shoot them.
