Many hunters mistakenly think spring plots are a waste of time because there’s so much natural greenery available to the deer.

May 2008
Deer hunters who only plant fall wildlife food plots are missing half the point.

The use of turkey decoys has grown rapidly in popularity among hunters.
Reach Into the bag of Dirty Tricks
April 2008
Wild turkey hunters are famous for their bags of dirty tricks. Dirty perhaps in the glaring eyes of a tom gobbler that just got schnooked by some kind of off-the-wall tactic that reduced his existence to a plate of fajitas.

In addition to offering concealment (main pic), blinds also make hunting much more comfortable. Blinds have definite advantages
March 2008
They say if you can see the sun glint off the eyeballs of a game animal that you must be really close to it.

Hunting rabbits is more productive in February because by now, heavy frosts in December and January have knocked back briars and other foliage that makes hunting tough. Rabbits wrap up the winter season
February 2008
Whoa daddy, the hunting season isn’t over yet. Now is the perfect time for some quality small-game hunting and for squirrel or rabbit hunters to dominate the woods and fields. Right now through the end of February, small-game hunters can capitalize on the best hunting conditions of the entire season. This is especially true for rabbit hunting across the Magnolia State.

There is still some rut activity going on in portions of the state, but hunters may need to rethink unsuccessful strategies. Last-ditch efforts can pay dividends
January 2008
It’s panic time in the deer woods. The palms of the hands go damp like they did on prom night. A chill runs down the back causing shivers to ripple up and down the spine. This makes one think a Nor’wester is about to blow in just to spit ice in the face for an insult.

Muzzleloaders have gotten substantially less primitive in the last decade, but that only serves to give deer hunters more opportunities afield. New rules mean less smoke, more thrill
December 2007
Deer hunting with primitive weapons has been radically redefined. Actually the new ruling took effect in the 2005-06 hunting season, so this will be its third year in force. Hunters are still just learning what the provision is and what it means to deer hunters looking for an alternative to blackpowder rifles for our two special primitive weapons seasons in December and January plus on into February in the Zone 2 southeast section of the state.

When it comes to deer hunting, it’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it — especially the item on the lower left. Some ideas for your deer backpack
November 2007
It’s a good thing somebody invented the ATV; otherwise, I could never get all my gear to the deer stand. Well, the guys in my deer camp don’t call me the Gadget Man for nothing. You may recall Gunsmoke episodes where the old traveling salesman would drive his wagon into town with his stock of house wares banging and clanging from the wagon. That’s me, except I use a Honda Foreman.

Crossbows may not be used in Mississippi during the archery season, but they’re a fun alternative to rifles. Are you ready for bow season? Really?
October 2007
It may be way too hot and humid to be outside these days, but it’s that time again to limber up the ol’ bow. And at the same time, also getting the shoulders, arms, and neck muscles stretched in shape. Getting that sighting eye tuned in again is good practice now, too. Before you know it, our designated start-up archery season the first day of October will be here.

The best dove fields will be rimmed by standing timber to give the birds roosting options. Doves usher in autumn seasons
September 2007
Outside of summer cotillions, antebellum pilgrimages and Fourth of July celebrations, there is little in the way of mass social gatherings in Mississippi until dove season rolls around about Labor Day. Having attended my share of these ritualistic smoothbore gunning events, they are well worth the wait through any kind of hot, humid and muggy Mississippi summer.

August is the month to get hunting guns and bows out to the range for cleaning, adjustments and sighting in. Get ready now for hunting season
August 2007
This time of year, most hunters are hunkered down under an air-conditioning vent. It’s still a bit of a wait until hunting season, but that doesn’t slow down the daydreams or anticipation. Patience may be a grand virtue, but in August, it’s wearing thin for hunters.
