Dam smallmouths: Target rocks for Pickwick bass
This month the smallmouths will start biting — particularly on topwater. I enjoy catching smallmouths at Pickwick Lake, which shares our border with Alabama and Tennessee. […]

Lake Bogue Homa, 6 miles east of Laurel on Highway 84, was restocked by the state about three years ago. This lake, with its 15-inch size limit, has a healthy population of bass. You’ll catch numbers of small fish here, but also some 3- to 5-pounders. The lake holds a lot of vegetation, including lily pads, grass and cypress trees. […]
August is the month to fish the lily pads at Ross Barnett for bass. You’ll find as many fish holding in shallow water there as you will in deep water. […]
To catch bass in July, you have to know where they’re holding, why they’re holding there and what types of lures and presentation are required to catch them. Then, realize that even though you may be a master-bass angler, you’ll lose some big ones. […]
In June, structure fishing gets really good on the Tennessee River’s Pickwick Lake. I’ll be fishing offshore on the mussel beds on the main river channel and secondary creek channels with crankbaits, jigs and 12-inch plastic worms. I’ll use a quality depth finder with side-imaging and down-imaging to locate those mussel beds. […]
This month, I expect to know where the bass are concentrated and to catch them fairly easily. At Lake Bogue Homa, east of Laurel, fishermen can expect to catch and release 25 to 35 bass a day in May, with some of those fish weighing 3 to 5 pounds due to the lake’s being restocked about three years ago. […]
I’m going to Bay Springs this month to fish for big spotted bass, but I won’t be disappointed if I catch some large smallmouths and largemouths. […]
This month, I’ll be returning to 500-acre Calling Panther Lake, located in Crystal Springs. March is the best month of the year to fish Calling Panther, and in my opinion, Calling Panther is the best lake in the state to catch a big bass. […]
Ross Barnett is my bass-fishing pick for February, and we’ll fish this lake with baits we can bang against rocks, lily-pad stems and vegetation. […]
This month, the big smallmouth start suspending off bluff banks and holding off bluff points at Pickwick Lake in northeast Mississippi. From the middle to the end of January is the best time to catch a trophy smallmouth at Pickwick. We catch these suspending fish on Smithwick Suspending Rogues and Mann’s Stone Jigs. Using those two lures, you should be able to catch smallmouth that weigh from 2 to 6 pounds each with some largemouths and spotted bass mixed in. […]
The state has just reworked Lake Bogue Homa, which is located east of Laurel off Highway 84. A grass and a lily-pad lake with cypress trees, Lake Bogue Homa is shallow — only 6- to 8-feet deep for the most part — and has a few small creeks running through it. I like to fish this lake in December because that’s when most of the bass relate to the creek channels, making the fish easy to find and catch. […]
I’m addicted to big spotted bass. They fight hard, they’re fun to catch and at this time of year, you often can catch a bunch of big ones — 2- to 5-pounders almost every day in November — at Bay Springs Lake.
