Are your guns ready for deer season?
We were sighting in several rifles for a friend last year — each year it seems he has another boy old enough to start deer hunting, and another rifle gets added to the batch I have to tune in on my range. […]

Fish I.D. features that display cartoon-like fish symbols have been around since fish finders became computerized and incorporated LCD screens, and the controversy about whether the feature helps or hurts your fishing has been around just as long. […]
Can you believe it? We’re heading into November, hunting season and the holidays. Man, how time flies when you’re having fun. And, yes, we’re right smack-dab in the middle of what I consider to be the very best time of the year to go crappie fishing. […]
Although only open for one year, Calling Panther Lake near Crystal Springs already is one of my favorite places for catching bass. Boat traffic will have decreased by this time of year, and I know I can bet on this 500-acre lake to produce bass weighing up to 7 pounds each. […]
It’s a good thing somebody invented the ATV; otherwise, I could never get all my gear to the deer stand. Well, the guys in my deer camp don’t call me the Gadget Man for nothing. You may recall Gunsmoke episodes where the old traveling salesman would drive his wagon into town with his stock of house wares banging and clanging from the wagon. That’s me, except I use a Honda Foreman. […]
It may be way too hot and humid to be outside these days, but it’s that time again to limber up the ol’ bow. And at the same time, also getting the shoulders, arms, and neck muscles stretched in shape. Getting that sighting eye tuned in again is good practice now, too. Before you know it, our designated start-up archery season the first day of October will be here. […]
My pick this month is Pickwick Lake on the Tennessee River in Northeast Mississippi. Pickwick is an unusual lake because it borders three states — Mississippi, Tennessee and Alabama. Although I’ll launch on the Mississippi side of the lake, I’ll run upriver to Alabama waters. You’ll need an Alabama fishing license as well as a Mississippi fishing license if you’re going to catch some of those big smallmouths, largemouths and stripers that will be concentrated below the dam at the headwaters of Pickwick Lake. […]
Hot dog! October is finally here!
I love October because it is the beginning of a new fishing season for me. Admittedly, my fishing calendar does not coincide with every one of yours — especially you deer hunters. […]
Crappie bite funny sometimes. My focus this month is the actual crappie bite itself. I want to focus on what the fish are telling us with the way they bite. Now pay attention, you may learn something. […]
Full-maintenance marine batteries are usually less expensive and lighter than maintenance-free models with the same amount of cranking power and reserve capacity. […]
Outside of summer cotillions, antebellum pilgrimages and Fourth of July celebrations, there is little in the way of mass social gatherings in Mississippi until dove season rolls around about Labor Day. […]
The first wild game Brent ever took was a dove — and he killed it with a Daisy air rifle. Kell Munson and I were cleaning our limits of birds with more than an hour of daylight left. It had been a great hunt over browntop millet, and Brent, my stepson, had a lot of fun all afternoon running out to pick up my birds. […]
