When it comes to live bait fishing for crappie, most of the time the options are severely limited to only the commercially available minnows found at the local bait shop. Late summer crappie can be finicky at times when it comes to feeding. Although their metabolisms are high from elevated water temperatures, many times the fish can be sluggish due to the heat, and oftentimes show a preference for natural baits over store-bought baits.

Has it been hot or what this summer? Record heat and “real-feel” temps have gone as high as I can remember, and, although my memory is not what it used to be, I’m old enough to remember lots of really hot summers and hot days on the lake. […]
Staring directly into the sun on the last day of August is enough to drive you insane. However, flip the calendar, and you begin to notice some tiny cracks in the heat wave that beams down on the water beginning the first day of September. Though it may seem far away, the approach of fall is imminent. […]
When most Mississippi anglers hear the word “crappie,” they immediately think of Grenada, Sardis and Arkabutla, all located in the Delta region in the state’s northwestern section. Although these lakes have reputations for producing extraordinary crappie in both numbers and size, other lakes in Mississippi also hold great crappie populations that don’t receive as much fishing pressure as the Delta’s glamor lakes. […]
The Louisiana paper mill responsible for the spill that caused a massive fish kill in the Pearl River has agreed to the fund state testing of seafood and private water wells, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries reported.
Temple-Inland has admitted so-called “black liquor” from its Bogalusa mill spilled into the Pearl River on Aug. 13, sapping the river’s water of oxygen and killing massive numbers of fish. […]
Temple-Inland Inc. admitted a discharge at it’s Bogalusa, La., plant caused the massive Pearl River fish kill that has included bass, catfish, paddlefish and federally protected Gulf sturgeon.
“We never lose sight that we are members and supporters of the Bogalusa area and apologize for the impact this issue at the mill has had on the Pearl River, its aqua culture (sic) and surrounding communities,” Temple-Inland’s Doyle Simmons said today (Aug. 17) in a news release. “We are working diligently and expeditiously to remove the fish kill and restore the quality of the river.” […]
Emory, Texas-based Lake Fork Trophy Lures has been making top-of-the-line, tournament-winning bass baits for many years. One of the company’s top producers is their “Live” Magic Shad, a swim bait that has accounted for countless trophy largemouth bass in big-money tournaments. […]
It’s the time of the year when white bass, striped bass and hybrid striped bass group up and chase shad, often corralling them near the surface where they have nowhere to escape. “Schooling” whites, stripes and hybrids can make for some exciting fishing on late afternoons in the summer. Catching these schooling, lure-crushing fish has salvaged more than a few of my black bass outings after sweating through a long Mississippi summer day for only a couple of bites. […]
The Great Flood of 2011 is over — thank goodness. We won’t know the full cost to homeowners, farmers and businessmen for months to come. But we already know that the levees survived (doesn’t that make you feel relieved?), and we survived. Much post-flood restoration work to homes, hunting and fishing camps, businesses and some lakes is on-going. […]
The Tennessee–Tombigbee Waterway is a 234-mile man-made waterway that extends from the Tennessee River to the junction of the Black Warrior-Tombigbee River system near Demopolis, Ala. Popularly known as the Tenn-Tom, the waterway was completed in December 1984 after 12 years of construction at a cost of nearly $2 billion. […]
Whether chasing crappie in a 100,000-acre reservoir or a slow-moving river, one of the prime keys is finding current breaks, according to crappie pro Kent Driscoll. […]
