Claiborne County yields opening-week trophy buck

Having grown up hunting his family’s farm in rural Claiborne County, 23-year-old Patrick McManus is no stranger to massive whitetails. His walls are adorned with a number of these monsters, but none had been taken with stick and string.

An avid bowhunter since the young age of 12, McManus has harvested dozens of does with archery gear; however, due to an intense deer management program combined with his own personal choice to hold out for a mature whitetail, McManus had yet to realize his dream of taking a trophy buck with his bow. Reluctant hunt results in trophy buck

When Jonathan Cleveland went to bed on the night of Jan. 15, he had plans to be in a deer stand the following day. However, when he climbed out of bed the next morning, one look outside gave him second thoughts: It was warm, with south-southwest winds gusting to 25 miles per hour. His first instinct was to skip the hunt.

Thankfully for the 33-year-old Canton hunter, he changed his mind at the last minute, went to his hunting spot, climbed into his stand.

Fifteen minutes later, Cleveland was standing over the fallen form of a massive 10-point that has been green scored at more than 150 inches Boone & Crockett. […]

Flora high-schooler kills two Madison County trophy bucks

Clara Grace Bozeman has been deer hunting with her dad Harvey for a few years now, and she harvested her first buck at the young age of 10.

She continued that streak with two huge bucks killed during the Christmas holiday while hunting on the Madison County family farm. […]

All Johnnie Dupont could see of the big buck slipping along the ridge was the front shoulders and rear end.

But after seeing a few deer easing through the woods ahead of the hounds released for a Dec. 27 dog drive in the Homochitto National Forest, Dupont kept his eyes on this one that had stopped to look and listen. […]

Yazoo County 15-year-old downs huge typical buck

Fifteen-year-old Josh Alford of Brandon knew what buck he wanted to kill when he hit the woods with his brother and uncle during Christmas break because the big 12-point typical had been captured on trail-cam photos several times.

What Alford didn’t know until he killed it on Dec. 29 was that it was just a monster Yazoo County deer: It has been green scored by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks at 192 gross inches. […]

Another possible Lauderdale County record buck taken

Last Wednesday (Jan. 18) was the final day of Mississippi’s Deer Management Zone 1 modern-rifle season, and Ricky Sullivan was in his shooting house as he had been countless times during the long season.

He had lived in that stand the previous week, missing only that Tuesday because of work, because bucks were running does seemingly everywhere across East Mississippi. […]
