MWW becoming new and improved

It’s axiomatic that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

And that really applies to the magazine you’re now holding in your hands.

If you’ve been a long-time subscriber or newsstand purchaser of Mississippi Woods & Waters, you know that our April issue looks entirely unlike any of the previous 116 that the magazine has published.

And there’s a good reason for that. Mississippi Woods & Waters has always been a “slick” publication. That’s printing jargon for the style of paper used in the magazine. Slick paper is coated with a light sheet of a wax-like substance that makes it smooth and slightly glossy.

But slick paper is expensive.

Because of the high cost, Mississippi Woods & Waters has been limited in its growth potential. The magazine’s been running around 68 pages, and that’s about as big as it’d ever be able to get.

And that’s a shame, because there may be no other state in the Union with more outdoor opportunities than this one. Every month, there is so much we want to tell our readers about undiscovered fishing holes, hidden hunting hotspots and hot new techniques, but we’ve been limited by a skinny page count.

Not anymore.

Mississippi Woods & Waters is now what is known in the industry as a “newsprint” publication. Newsprint paper is cheaper than slick paper because it doesn’t have the fancy coating. It’s been the medium of choice for newspapers since right around the time Johannes Gutenberg invented his press.

Because of the cost-savings, Mississippi Woods & Waters will now forever be a thicker publication. That means more pages with more stories and more pictures for us to all share in our collective passion — the Magnolia State outdoors.

Don’t worry: Nothing’s been removed. We still deliver the outdoor news you crave, authored by one of the finest teams of writers in the country.

But a whole lot has been added, and even more will come in the future as we continue to grow.

And that brings up another change. Beginning next month, Mississippi Woods & Waters will change its name to Mississippi Sportsman. Below is a sneak peek of our new logo.
