Arrest made in fisherman’s shooting death

Teen confesses to being responsible for Johnson’s murder

A Jackson teenager has been arrested and charged with capital murder in Sunday’s shooting death of a fisherman in town for this week’s Bassmaster Central Open at nearby Barnett Reservoir.

Jackson Police Department officials say Shun Brown, 17, of Jackson, has confessed to being responsible in the death of Jimmy Johnson of Ganado, Texas.

Johnson, 56, one of 154 pro fishermen entered in the tournament, was shot in the face at close range in the parking lot of Motel 6 on the Frontage Road of I-55 North in Jackson.

According to reports, Johnson and his wife were in their room at Motel 6 when he saw a man through his hotel window rummaging through his covered bass boat. Johnson went to intervene and an altercation took place near his motel room door and boat. Johnson was shot once in the face and died on the scene a few feet from his boat.

B.A.S.S. officials say the Bassmaster Central Open will continue as scheduled at Madison Landing at Barnett Reservoir. Fishing is scheduled to begin shortly after sunrise on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Weigh-ins will be held Thursday and Friday at the Madison Landing, and Saturday’s final weigh-in will be at the Bass Pro Shops location in Pearl.

The public is invited to attend the free weigh-ins, and B.A.S.S. officials say Johnson will be remembered at each event.
