Fishing-friendly city

Lowry launches a June Bug colored critter bait toward a cluster of water hyacinths. The June Bug color is popular among anglers at Columbus Lake.

Columbus Lake is near the historic City of Columbus. The Convention and Visitors Bureau promotes fishing and eco-tourism, and has invested greatly in tournament fishing.

The enthusiasm shared by the Columbus CVB has spilled over into the local community.

The Quality Inn on Highway 45 is very angler conscious: The manager offers to open the complimentary breakfast at 4 a.m. to accommodate early rising fishermen. Outside, power poles in the parking lots have banks of electrical outlets that allow anglers to recharge boat batteries, free of charge.

“We have invested over $100,000 in attracting bass tournaments,” said Nancy Luke, president of the CVB. “But we welcome the family angler, as well.

“There are bed and breakfasts, parks, shopping opportunities, large parks for picnics and outdoor fun, fine dining and historical sites all around the city.”
