Improve your spinning reel game with these tips

Pro angler Brian Latimer shares his spinning reel tips

A lot of bass anglers hate using a spinning reel. But with some lures and under certain conditions, they are the better option. One downfall of spinning reels is they are not as accurate as baitcasters. With a baitcaster, it’s easy to control the distance of your cast by using your thumb to ease down on the line, allowing you to slow the cast down until your lure gently falls where you want it to.

Spinning reels are very effective when using extremely lightweight lures, and when it’s very windy. Both of those conditions are tougher with baitcasters. Most anglers accept the limitations mentioned above when they pick up a spinning reel. But they don’t need to. You can get the best of both worlds with these tips from pro bass angler Brian Latimer of Belton, S.C.

Latimer said that just like with a baitcaster, it’s all in the thumb. But because of the way line comes off the spool of a spinning reel, it’s obviously not quite the same.
