What to throw at night

Bassing at night calls for dark lures that move a lot of water and make a lot of noise. Black is the preferred color.

Weedless: Any of the myriad of plastic frogs or critter baits is a good choice in weeds, grass and lily pads. Techniques for day fishing can be used after sunset. Slowing down the retrieve just a little will keep the bait in the strike zone a little longer, giving the bass more time to strike. Speed worms on big weedless jigs move a lot of water, indicating to bass a big meal is nearby. Add worm rattles for added fish attraction. And black is the color of the evening.

Noisemakers: Shallow open water and any structure or edges are the perfect place to throw floaters that move water, such as the Jitterbug, Hula-Popper, Spin Ditty, Torpedo, Chug Bug or Devil’s Horse. Here again, the dark horse is the winner. The most popular Jitterbug color sold is black. Black buzzbaits are also effective.
