Enjoy a picturesque view of a fabulous fishing lake

One of the most picturesque parks in Mississippi, J.P. Coleman State Park near Iuka sits on a bluff overlooking a top national fishing destination, Pickwick Lake.

Part of the Tennessee River, Pickwick Lake spreads across 47,500 acres. For 53 miles along the river, it runs through three states from Florence, Ala., to Counce, Tenn. Well-known for producing giant smallmouth bass, the lake also delivers double-digit largemouth, striped bass, crappie, huge catfish and many other species.

“The biggest smallmouth I caught at Pickwick weighed about 8 pounds,” recalled Roger Stegall a professional bass angler, guide and Mississippi Outdoor Hall of Famer (662-423-3869, www.Fishpickwick.com) from Iuka. “I’ve probably caught about 50 smallmouth over 7 pounds at Pickwick. Very few places in Mississippi or anywhere in the South, allow anglers to catch smallmouth, largemouth and spotted bass all in the same spot.”

A recreational cornerstone

J.P. Coleman State Park makes an excellent jumping-off place for any adventure. Besides fishing, people can also experience water skiing, swimming, exploring nearby forests and incredible bird watching opportunities.

“The park holds significance as a recreational cornerstone in Northeast Mississippi,” said Dustin Jones, park manager. “Its role as a hub for boating and fishing on Pickwick Lake also extends its significance to its environmental and community impact as it protects diverse ecosystems that support wildlife like bald eagles, migratory birds, deer, foxes, raccoons and more.”

Lodging options include motel rooms with two handicap-accessible ones or renting one-bedroom duplex cabins. People can also stay in three luxurious townhouses with a great view of Pickwick Lake, all with many amenities.

“The park offers an extensive number of attractions and facilities for its visitors and guests,” Jones said. “With the lake right there, the park is ideal for all types of water activities. People can camp in one of 69 recreational vehicle campsites with full hookups, including 11 on the water that overlook Indian Creek.”

Enjoy picnicking or grilling on the grounds. Larger groups can use the pavilion. Children will play in the playground. Everyone loves the swimming pool and the 18-hole miniature golf course. Large groups or functions like weddings can reserve a conference room for up to 150 people. Some couples say their vows on the grounds overlooking the lake.

Plenty to offer

Nature lovers might want to visit Cooper Falls. The 50-foot waterfall sits just outside of the park boundary, but boaters can visit it. Many photographers enjoy seeing its scenic beauty.

“J.P. Coleman State Park is a must-visit for anyone seeking an outdoor adventure, relaxation, or just a family-friendly getaway on the stunning Pickwick Lake,” Jones said. “With premier fishing, diverse lodging and year-round camping, or as a host to your wedding or other event, the park can help to deliver some unforgettable memories or experiences with serene views across the lake.”

Without a restaurant on the grounds, people can take drive to Iuka or Counce to dine out or buy supplies. Since Pickwick Lake touches Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama, people could easily catch fish in three states. An Alabama fishing license allows anglers to fish from the Wilson Dam in Florence, Ala. to the Pickwick Dam in Counce. A Tennessee or a Mississippi license restricts anglers to portions of the lake.

“If one is looking for a special place to enjoy the fruits of nature, share with family or spend time alone, give J.P. Coleman State Park a chance to prove what it has to offer,” Jones said. “With upgrades coming in the future, this is by far one of the best unkept secrets in Mississippi.”

The park says open all year long. For more information, call (662) 423-6515 or see www.mdwfp.com/parks-destinations/park/jp-coleman-state-park.
