Recently, there were a few more introductions into the crappie arena during the International Consortium of Allied Sporting Trades (ICAST).
Here’s a quick rundown:
• Bobby Garland Itty Bit — Made in 1/48- and 1/64-ounce sizes, this tiny profile jig might be just the ticket when crappie play hard to get.
• Blakemore Road Runner Slabaliscious — This is the first Road Runner model with a buttontail body. It’s got the same underspin attraction, but includes a kicking tail that’ll put out a lot of thump in swimming presentations.
• Strike King Mr. Crappie Sausage Head — Wally “Mr. Crappie” Marshall said this one’s made for bumping off cover, kinda like a football-head jig traversing offshore structure.
The wider, almost barrel-like head design enables this jig to deflect off wood, vegetation or even bridge pilings. One of Marshall’s top uses for the Sausage Head is walking the bait through lily pad stems under a cork.
• Strike King Mr. Crappie Krappie Kickers — Basically a scaled-down version of the swim jigs we throw at largemouth bass, the skirted Krappie Kicker sports an angled head that comes through vegetation well and a Slabalicious tail that kicks up plenty of commotion.
“I like to pitch and pull this bait over logs and brush piles, laydown trees and hydrilla,” Marshall said. “With my 10-foot Wally Marshall Series jig pole with a WMS 100 spinning reel, I can pitch this bait 25 to 30 feet with a light presentation.”
