The hand-grabbing season

Jeannie Leach of Sebastopol had hand-grabbing on her “bucket list” and is now a fan of the sport. Here Jeannie holds her first grab while other members of Team Parker work another box in the background.

The hand-grabbing season coincides with the spawning period for blue cats and flatheads. In natural conditions, these fish will spawn in hollow logs, caves and recesses created by fallen trees or jammed debris.

Entrance tunnels to abandoned beaver lodges or in river banks are also used. Where a lake or reservoir flooded a road or highway, the submerged culverts also provide nesting places.

Grabbing in these natural environs can be dangerous; it is definitely not a sport for the novice, and should never be attempted alone.

In Mississippi the season opens May 1 and ends July 15.
