Avoid entering water, eating seafood from are until further notice, MDEQ officials say
A portion of the Biloxi beach was closed today by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality after a break in a main break outside a lift station, SunHerald.com reported.
Crews are working to repair the break, but bacteria levels were expected to be high in the waters of the beach, officials told the newspaper.
The effected stretch of beach runs from Travia Avenue to Iberville Drive, according to SunHerald.com.
“The city along with Harrison County Sand Beach Authority are taking measures to prevent further flow into the Mississippi Sound,” MDEQ Communications Director Robbie Wilbur said. “We advise residents to not enter the water or eat any seafood from these nearshore waters until further notice.”
MDEQ will monitor the water and lift the closure when bacteria levels indicate conditions are safe for water contact, Wilbur said.
Officials also advise bacteria levels may be high in an area of beach in Hancock County from the Buccaneer State Park sign to State Park Road and in Pass Christian from Fort Henry to Elliott Avenue.
