Youth fishing camps set

Youth camps to be held at Leroy Percy State Park, Turcotte Education Center, Paul B. Johnson State Park

Three youth fishing camps have been scheduled by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.

Each camp, open to children 11 to 15 years of age, is held in conjunction with the Mississippi Bass Federation. The camps will each accommodate 20 youths.

The first camp will be held June 4-7 at Leroy Percy State Park near Hollandale, and will be followed by a second camp on June 18-21 at the Turcotte Education Center in Madison County. The third camp is scheduled for July 23-26 at Paul B. Johnson State Park near Hattiesburg.

The camps are designed to provide opportunities, skills and resources to Mississippi’s youth and introduce them to the sport of fishing.

Topics during the four-day camps include fish identification and aging, fishing tackle and lure selection, casting techniques, types of boats and conservation techniques.

“The camp is much more than kids going fishing,” MDWFP Fisheries Bureau Assistant Director Larry Pugh said. “Classroom discussions and hands-on exercises led by MDWFP fisheries biologists will help students gain a better understanding of fish, fishing and fisheries management.”
