Big shows an indication that hunting season is fast approaching
Hunting season is fast approaching, and no freak summer cold fronts were needed to alert us to that fact. All we have to do is open our email inboxes and read the latest announcements of wildlife shows.
* It starts this weekend with the 28th annual Mississippi Wildlife Extravaganza at the Trade Mart in Jackson. The consumer show will include over 200 exhibitors pushing the latest in outdoor gear, accessories, books, guided trips and information on hunting and fishing opportunities. Show hours are 3-9 p.m. on Friday, 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday.
In addition to special guest Eva Shockey, a rising TV star in outdoor programming and daughter of veteran TV star Jim Shockey, the Extravaganza is being called a “Mississippi Homecoming” featuring successful native sportsmen like Mossy Oak’s Ronnie “Cuz” Strickland, world turkey calling champion and call maker Preston Pittman, duck caller and call maker Greg Hood as well as most of the members of Team Primos.

* The Lincoln County Wildlife Expo will be held Sept. 12-13 at the Lincoln Civic Center in Brookhaven. Show hours are 5-9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-7 p.m. on Saturday.
In addition to exhibitors selling outdoors-related equipment, the show will feature a Kid’s Zone, alligator and snake demonstrations with live specimens, interactive hand-grabbing for catfish, and archery and air rifle ranges.
For the first time, the event will include a BBQ Cook-Off with Boston butts, ribs and chicken. It is open to anyone who’d like to show off his, her or their cooking skills.
The event will serve as a scoring session for Magnolia Records Program and there is the annual Big Buck Contest for deer taken during the previous season.

* Without doubt, the most ambitious outdoor show on the calendar is the one true outdoor show — the first Mississippi Ultimate Outdoor Expo, which is scheduled for Sept. 19-21.
“What makes it different is that it will be actually outdoors, which gives our exhibitors plenty of room to show their equipment in the setting it will be used,” said organizer Dan Robinson of Jackson. “We’ve got a 700-acre site at the Mississippi Off Road Adventures Park off Elton Road in Jackson.”
According to Robinson, there is room for a rifle range, archery shoots, ATV test drives, RV displays, and even food plot demonstrations with tractors “and the works. Heck, we even have a lake for retrievers and even boats,” he said.
The show hours will be Friday 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m.-6 p.m.; and Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
For more information, contact Robinson at (601) 540-6275 or MsOutdoorExpo@gmail.com, or visit the Mississippi Ultimate Outdoors Expo page on Facebook.
