Annual Deer Program Report, when available, is important tool

The information hunters must give at WMA check stations before and after each hunt is vital, in that it helps wildlife biologists analyze the many aspects of hunting. It is included in the annual Deer Program Report, which is a good tool for all deer hunters.

As valuable as any accessory to Mississippi deer hunters who concentrate their efforts on state wildlife management areas is the annual Deer Program Report. It is a must read.

This comprehensive report compiled by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks deer biologists, WMA managers, wildlife specialists and officials tells virtually the whole story on what is happening with our deer herd, harvests, and other critical deer hunting information.

The latest complete version of this report online at mdwfp.com at the time of this writing, sadly, was for the 2012 hunting season.

Additional data is available for more current years, but not the entire annual reports. This may be posted soon (there is a natural delay in getting data compiled and a report finished after each season is over).

For many years, the report was published in a bound document so hunters could pick them up at the MDWFP Jackson office, but cost cutting measures ended that practice and the report is now only available online. People can print copies, but know this: It is extensive, so load the printer tray with plenty of paper.

The 2012 report was nearly 80 pages long, but was and still is worth the effort and expense to download and study.
