Ken Lancaster is a bow hunter. It is as much a part of his fabric as his genetic code.
“People who know me through our outdoors television show or the time I spent managing the bow shop at Van’s in Brandon, realize I am first and foremost an archery hunter,” said Lancaster, star of the Antler Insanity TV series. “Sure I still gun hunt some, but the biggest thrill for me is to pull back on my Elite bow on a big buck at a short bow hunting range. To me this is the real challenging part of bow hunting.
“When I do trade shows all across the country or other events when I have the opportunity to mix in public with other hunters, I will invariably be asked what archery equipment do I use and in particular the broadhead I have found most effective on big bodied white-tailed bucks.”
Throughout his career, he has used too many different brands of bows, arrows, and broadheads to remember. Some worked, he said, and some were just pitiful. It was only natural for a guy who loves to archery hunt and who once worked as a bow mechanic would never be satisfied.
“As an experienced bow set up mechanic, bow hunter, and archery enthusiast it only seemed natural that I might work on creating a broadhead with all the ideal characteristics I felt needed to be highly effective at deer and big game hunting,” he said. “This did not come about without considerable trial and error, adjustments and tweaking to get everything to work perfect. Finally I think we have gotten there with the AXE broadheads.”
Many broadhead choices abound, and so do opinions. The debate over the fixed blade types versus the expandable models continues. There are justifications for both. Sometimes it boils down to personal preference or successful experiences.
For Lancaster, it’s the Axe, and he explains why. First off, in the closed position the AXE broadhead models like the Bone Crusher or the Battle Axe are designed so it is physically impossible for the blades to open in flight. The blades’ center of gravity actually extends beyond the center line of the ferrule. Forward momentum keeps the blades closed during flight.
Secondly the AXE broadhead is designed to conserve energy by reducing drag. The razor like tip requires less kinetic energy during penetration. The deployment system and curved blades reduce the loss of energy for a full 2-inch cut. www.antlerinsanity.com.
