Location, location, location

Jason Garbo uses his dad’s camera data to collect good bucks as well.

If buying and selling real estate is all about location, as they say it is, then the proper site selection of game cameras has got to be just as crucial to the process of conducting deer surveys. Trail cameras have to be placed in high-traffic areas.

“I have learned by trial and error where the best buck travel corridors are located, what food plots bucks tend to frequent during the pre-rut and which scrapes and scrape lines are perennial ones,” said Bill Garbo. “During the early pre-rut, my cameras are placed to watch heavily traveled buck corridors, and then at the first sign of scraping activity, I relocate the cameras to monitor perennial scrape locations.

“In my experience, placing cameras at primary scrape-line locations has proven over time to be a sound method for monitoring and assessing the population of bucks that use my particular property during the rut.

“Hunters need to experiment with various set ups on a given property to fully understand what works best. Each property has its own unique set of conditions related to habitat, cover and hunting pressure.”
