Sullivan’s strategy

Duke Wilson and Ricky Sullivan quickly realized that they had a potential record-book buck on their new lease. Some hunters might have used tree stands in the thick woods where the deer bedded and spent most of its time, gambling on wind direction favoring them and depending on being close to give them an advantage.

This is often not a bad plan.

However Wilson and Sullivan decided on a strategy that would keep the buck on their relatively small (386 acres) lease as much of the time as possible.

This would necessitate keeping their scent away from the buck, a strategy that ultimately paid off.

Some of their measures approached the extreme.

In their main shoot house — Condo One — they installed a urinal that led through tubing to an underground “septic tank” made of rocks and covered with soil.

Windows stayed closed during hunts until a deer was spotted either through glass or Plexiglas windows, or the Plexiglas inserts in wooden frames.

A catalytic heater stayed in the stand, as well as a comfortable chair.

The determined hunters did not ride four-wheelers around the property or walk the area unnecessarily.

Discipline in following their scent control plan was the priority.
