Wayne County deer herd gets a little thinned

Wayne County is absolutely loaded with does.

Local doctor introduces youth to deer hunting.

Eastcentral Mississippi isn’t known for producing bucks that are even in the same category as the trophies that hail from the Delta, but what the area certainly doesn’t lack is numbers.

Perhaps that’s part of the problem.

I had the pleasure of spending a couple days of my Christmas break hunting with Dr. Scott Tynes, his daughter Morgan and my daughter Taylor on a couple of small Wayne County tracts owned by the Tynes family.

We didn’t settle the crosshairs on any big bucks, but Taylor shot a doe — her second deer ever — and Morgan dropped one as well. We saw plenty of deer.

“We have a doe problem here,” Tynes said, after encouraging us to drop nannies if we wanted some meat. “We really need to get rid of some of them.”

Although Tynes owns only 50 acres in the area, he plants it every year to draw in the deer that crowd the area. He said nice bucks are not out of the realm of possibilities, but does are always a slam dunk.

Watch the accompanying video to see some of the action from the trip, and to get Tynes’ philosophy on getting and keeping kids interested in hunting.
