CAPTAIN PAUL'S 'HANDS ON' GPS SEMINAR WILL BE HELD ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2008 IN SLIDELL, LA

    August 16, 2008 at 11:16am

    .
    Captain Paul,
I have a 520c (lowrance) for about 8 months, and for the last 4 trips, usually in late morning to early afternoon, I get the 'gps not responding' message. Now, sometimes it goes back quickly to 'position acquired', after turning the unit off, and sometimes it goes back and forth from 'position acquired' to the not responding message. Whats funny, is it always seems to work in the morning. The sonar continues to work, and the voltage readout has been over 12. All other functions work.

My question is, would a bad power cable or bad antenna cause this problem-- but why is it so sporatic. I was fishing in areas that were unobstructed and that I had a signal for the first part of the day. I don't think its a power issue, but I'm worried that tournament fishing in areas I don't fish often and this happens- if I can get a signal back, good, but if not navigating places like the spillway can be tough. Any help appreciated,

    Thanks

    Lowrance LCX 37c Mapping question
    Capt Paul,

I have just purchased a Lowrance LCX 37c. This is my first Lowrance unit, as I have been an avid Garmin user for the past 10 years but recently had several problems with my 530s unit from Garmin and have decided to give Lowrance a try...

I have some mapping questions for you. I am looking at the Navionics Gold Hot Maps Premium South S-4 card. I fish lakes in Arkansas, Mississippi and the LA coast near Venice. I know that I need the Hot Maps for the lakes in AR amd MS, but my question is: Do you think I will also need the 15xg Nautical Map card for the coastal areas around Venice? I rarely venture offshore. The guy at Navionics is claiming that I will pick up more detail in the coastal area with the 15xg card, I told him that I would primarly be fishing inshore, but he stuck with his orginal answer--that I would need both.

Also, I am very used to using the Garmin Mapsource Topo program to manage my data with my computer. I am assuming that I will need to buy the MapCreate Topo program from Lowrance to enjoy the same capabilites?

Thanks in advance for your response.

Capt. Paul Is there a GPS system that uses satellite maps instead of topo/drawn maps? I am tired of my GPS screen telling me I am driving over land when there is none in sight.

    Thanks

    GPS Garmin 276C question ? ? ? ?

I have asked this question in the GPS portion of the website but wanted some feedback here as well. I have a Garmin 276C and I have a list of several waypoints on my computer. Is there a way to import that list of waypoints into Mapsource software and then transfer it to my GPS. I would rather not manually type in all the waypoints myself. Do you know an easier way or where to find help on this? I talked to Garmin tech support and they told me to type them in manually.

Thanks FOR ANY HELP YOU MAY BE ABLE TO GIVE.

If you live in Mississippi and have a Mississippi fishing license, is it legal to fish in the Pearl River. Without getting a ticket from Louisiana fish and Game.

CAPTAIN PAUL IS HOLDING A 'HANDS ON' SEMINAR ON GPS.

    February 03, 2008 at 11:29am

    .
    Dear Capt. Paul;

A quick question that I suspect will require a not so quick answer.

I have had a Garmin 276C GPS that I use during the week in my truck. But on the weekends it makes a detour to my boat to both guide me, as well as mark fishing spots, channels and so on. I have to say that it has worked admirably both in the truck and in the boat.

I have just bought a boat with a fixed mounted Garmin 182C. I would like to transfer all of my favorite spots, waypoints, etc. from the 276C to the 182C.

Whereas the 276 has a data port, the 182 does not. I have backed up all my waypoints etc. from the 276 to my computer and I am wondering if I can transfer the points to the new unit and how.

Just to provide as much information as I can, I have a data card for highway use and a Bluechart for marine use. Naturally I have to swap them out when I transfer the unit from the truck to the boat.

I'm sure there is a way, but the manual does not give any information on a procedure to accomplish this transfer.

I did notice that there is a 'transfer data' section in the menu on the 182, but no details. I am going to guess that the transfer must be made via the data card.

    Can you help?

    Thanks

    TJ
