‘renot16’ takes weird-looking gobbler

Wiggins hunter Matt Renot knew there was a gobbler living behind his grandfather’s Stone County home, but when he headed to the woods yesterday (March 23) he didn’t even think about chasing the bird.

“We’ve heard it gobbling back there for the past three years, but nobody could get it to do anything,” said Renot, pointing out that no one had even laid eyes on the wary turkey. “My grandfather said he was going to listen (for gobbling) there, and I said I was going to my hunting club and listen.” […]

Shaffer buck misses B&C all-time record book by 3 1/2 inches

On Dec. 2, the opening day of primitive weapon season, Dwight Shaffer was waiting for his brother Burnell to pick him up and drive to a nearby hunting camp for an afternoon hunt.

Then his wife’s father interrupted with his latest story about a big deer he’d been seeing, news that nearly landed Shaffer in the Boone & Crockett Record Book of North American Big Game. […]

Calling Panther lake record broken twice in a week

When James Allen of Crystal Springs headed to Calling Panther Lake on Feb. 26, he had his sights set on landing a lunker largemouth. And since his neighbor, David Howell had just broken the old lake record the previous weekend with a 27 ½-inch-long, 14-pound, 1-ounce trophy Allen knew that the time was right to be wetting his line in the waters of the lake near his home.

Incredibly, David Howell also held the old lake record, a 13-pound, 4-ounce sow caught back on Feb. 2, 2009. […]

190-class buck downed before dogs released on Hatchapaloo Hunting Club

It was bitterly cold on the Jan. 9, and only five truckloads of Hatchapaloo Hunting Club members had shown up for a morning dog hunt. The hunters were riding the more than 30 miles of roads on the 7,000-acre Smith County lease looking for a likely place to release their dogs.

“We were just riding and trying to stay in the truck because it was so cold,” joked Gary Kennedy, known at the camp as “Festus Hagen.” […]

Canton archer gets second shot, connects on 160-class buck

Claudie Steen watched the nice 11-point ease into the bottleneck, and drew his bow as the animal approached his stand site. He had seen the deer earlier while trailing another deer he had arrowed, and now everything was falling in place.

At a mere 15 yards, the Canton hunter put his pin on the deer’s vitals and released the arrow. And felt his stomach churn as the animal ducked and quickly disappeared.

That was Jan. 31, 2010. […]

Madison County hunt yeilds 171-inch bruiser

The light of enthusiasm tends to dim somewhat over the years as some deer hunters waiting on a chance at a trophy buck. This might describe the buck-hunting tenure of Jack Webb of Madison County, but his long wait is over.

Webb took that proverbial “buck of a lifetime” on Dec. 27. The 170-class deer has renewed the hunter’s energy and dedication to the sport. […]

200-inch buck killed after two-year pursuit

August 2009 marked the beginning of an amazing whitetail adventure for 24-year-old Casey Orr, who decided to do a little pre-season scouting on his family’s farm in Choctaw County in preparation for the upcoming deer season.

The baseball coach at nearby Starkville Academy arrived at a vantage point on a power line right-of-way overlooking a distant clover plot, and he could hardly believe his eyes: A monster buck with a gigantic set of palmated antlers was in the green patch. […]

Spillway Spectacular

“The colder the weather, the better the fishing gets” is the way professional angler Kent Driscoll describes the crappie fishing behind the dam at Ross Barnett Reservoir.

The spillway that turns the Pearl River impoundment back into the Pearl River is a well-known hotspot for crappie anglers throughout the year. One reason for the magnetism of the area is the moving water spilling through the dam draws baitfish from the far reaches of the Pearl and also from the Ross Barnett impoundment itself. […]

Bowhunter drops Lauderdale monster

Anticipation grew with each passing day for Ricky McCullough and his son Josh as they made regular trips to check their game camera throughout the summer and into the early fall.

As opening day of bow season neared, there was a heightened since of urgency. A trophy buck continued to visit their camera site on a regular basis. The father and son team had scouted the area thoroughly and located a core area that was home to several deer.

One outstanding buck was particularly interesting. […]
