Free fly-fishing fair Saturday in Ocean Springs

Catching a redfish on a fly is growing in popularity and a free Fly Fishing Fair for salt water anglers will be held this weekend in Ocean Springs, with experts to assist anyone in that pursuit.

Event offers instruction on fly-fishing in salt water

The Gulf Coast Council of Fly Fishers International (GCC-FFI) will hold a Fly Fishing Fair Saturday at Ocean Springs, with proceeds donated to the future of fishing off the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

“All the monies raised through raffles and silent auctions will be given to the University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Research Lab in Ocean Springs,” said Glen Davis, a member of the Mississippi Fly Fishers Club, which along with the Historic Ocean Springs Saltwater Fly Fishing Club (HOSS-FLY) is helping organize the event.

“The great thing is that the admission is still free and anyone interested in fly fishing can attend. The money we raise for the Lab will be 50 percent of what is raised on auctions and raffles on trips, equipment and accessories.”

The event will be Sept. 16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and held at the Ocean Springs Civic Center at 3730 Bienville Boulevard, Ocean Springs MS 39564.

According to HOSS-FLY, events will include a variety of fly-fishing instruction, including beginner classes, casting lessons, fly-fishing seminars and casting instructor certification.

“There will be fly-tying demonstrations by award-winning fly tiers from all over the country,” said Jeff Deuschle of HOSS-FLY. “We’ll have programs specifically for scouts and outdoor vendors.
