Gator applicants watching for ‘the’ e-mail

With 6,752 applicants submitting over 25,000 zone applications for the 920 permits available for the 2013 alligator season in Mississippi, the odds are against receiving notification of a successful draw in the next few days. But it's a good bet all of the applicants will be watching their e-mails closely over the next few days.

New fishing lake to open soon at Charlie Capps WMA

Thousands of Mississippi alligator hunting hopefuls are watching their e-mail in-boxes, hoping to see a notice pop in from the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.

Most will be disappointed when nothing arrives.

With only 920 permits available statewide divided in seven zones, and with a total of 6,759 applicants submitting 25,554 zone applications, the odds are very much against selection when the drawing occurs early this week.

“Our staff is working diligently to prepare the drawing process,” said a Facebook post by Ricky Flynt, the alligator program coordinator for the state wildlife agency. “This is a huge event and we are working hard (to) make sure everything is in correct working order (testing) for people to immediately start verifying intent to hunt and register for classes, before we hit the send button.”

The application process closed at midnight Monday (June 17) and Flynt said it would be three to five working days before the drawing would be completed.

Once the “winners” are selected and notified, they will have until July 1 to verify their selection by return e-mail, or they will be replaced by draw from the original pool of applicants.

Good luck!

New lake to open at Capps WMA

MDWFP officials have set June 29 and July 1 as the opening days for the new 40-acre lake at Charlie Capps Wildlife Management Area in Bolivar County. Only children ages 15 and under will be allowed to fish on June 29, but the lake opens to all fishermen on July 1.

Once a 500-acre lake that was part of the agency’s state lakes system, most of it was converted into a WMA for waterfowl. The smaller lake was built in 2010 within the original lake, and was stocked with bass, Magnolia crappie, bream and catfish.

There is no boat ramp, but small boats are welcome. Since the lake is within a WMA, a WMA users permit ($15 residents, $30 non-residents) is required of any non-exempt license holder.

Youth Participation Initiative

The MDWFP will begin accepting proposals for its 2013-14 Youth Participation Initiative Program, which helps fund programs designed to promote recruitment and retention of young sportsmen in outdoor pursuits and to provide education in conservation of natural resources.

In 2012-13, a total of $171,953 was provided to state agencies, education institutions and non-profit organizations.

The application period will end on Aug. 15. For more information on the program, contact the MDWFP at (601) 432-2199.

Deer management workshops set

Mississippi State University’s Extension Service and College of Forest Resources will partner with the MDWFP to sponsor a pair of two-day deer management workshops this summer.

The first workshop is July 12-13 at Thompson Hall on the MSU campus in Starkville. The second will be Aug. 9-10 at MSU’s Coastal Research and Extension Center in Biloxi. All workshops begin at 9 a.m. and end at 4:30 p.m., and participants may attend both days or just one day.

Day 1 topics (at both workshops) are camera survey setup, deer nutrition, food plots, deer habitat, deer ecology, harvest management and hunter recruitment.

Day 2 topics are camera survey analysis, science of deer harvest, scoring antlers, how to age deer, wild pig management and butchering and meat handling techniques.

Registration is $95 per day or $180 for each two-day session, and includes class materials, lunch and a T-shirt or cap. For more information or to register, visit www.cfr.msstate.edu/workshops/deer2013 or call (662) 352-3133.

Barnett Reservoir tournament draws July 17

Organizations or individuals who plan to hold organized fishing tournaments at a major landing on Ross Barnett Reservoir near Jackson will be required to enter the annual drawing process on July 17, officials of the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District have announced.

The annual process is conducted by a blind draw of all tournament hosts, with several rounds held. Each person gets to pick one number for order of date/landing selection in each round.

It costs nothing to participate in the draw, but the tournament fees of $2 per boat remains in effect and will be required to be submitted, along with a tournament roster, within seven days after the event.

For a complete list of tournament rules and regulations, contact Craig Hunt at chunt@therez.ms or call (601) 856-6574.
