17-point tapes out at 205 inches in Claiborne County
One of the largest buck’s ever taken on public land in Mississippi — and a possible state record — was taken Wednesday morning by a Tishomingo County hunter enjoying a draw hunt at Canemount Wildlife Management Area in Claiborne County, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks confirmed.
Josh Clark killed the 17-point, which he called a main-frame 11 with lots of stickers, on Unit 3 at the WMA. It was taken on the last day (Dec. 14) of the primitive weapons season at Canemount.
Mississippi’s record for typical bucks is 184 6/8 inches, killed by in 2010 James Saunders in Adams County. It is not known if Clark’s buck will be classified as typical or non-typical.
Clark — who did not wish to discuss the details of the hunt “until I’ve weighed all my options” — said he has yet to have the buck scored by a certified B&C scorer but planned to have that done today.
“I was blessed with a buck of a lifetime this morning,” Clark posted on his Facebook page.”I really don’t think it (has) set in how big this deer really is. My good friend Perry Ross green scored him at 205 and some change.”
The massve buck was scored at 175 at Canemount WMA the day it was killed, but MDWFP Chief of Wildlife Chad Dacus said Thursday that he believes it will score higher.
“That seems a little low, in my opinion, based on the photo,” Dacus said of the 175-inch figure.
The veteran wildlife biologist said he’s interested to see how an certified scorer will tape out the rack.
“Yes, I saw the 205 and the 175, and I want to see what it scores after a B&C scorer looks at it and tapes it out,” Dacus said. “It’s the biggest I’ve seen on public land.”
