Hillside NWR accepting turkey applications

Mississippi has a lot of prime public hunting land for the spring turkey. Some of the best is at Hillside and Panther Swamp National Wildlife Refuges in the Delta.

Three hunting periods are open to hunters

Applications for the spring turkey hunt at Hillside National Wildlife Refuge are now being accepted, according to the Teddy Roosevelt National Refuge Complex.

Hillside is one of only two refuges in the complex to hold turkey hunts, and is the only one with a draw hunt. The season at Panther Swamp is open to hunting without draw.

To be eligible for the limited Hillside hunt, applicants must possess the TR Complex Annual Public Use Permit.

There will be three Hillside hunts in 2017 — March 17-19; April 7-9; or April 21-23 — and applicants are allowed to choose only one hunt. The bag limit is two mature gobblers per hunt. Applications may have up to two applicants and must be postmarked no later than Feb. 15, 2017.  Applications may be printed from www.fws.gov/refuge/hillside or may be obtained from the T R Complex office(s) located at Panther Swamp NWR and Yazoo NWR.

At Panther Swamp, the limit is one adult gobbler per day, two per season for each hunter. The public use permit is required, along with state licenses.
