Arms Trade Treaty facts are still alarming
After my September column on the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty, two readers took me to task for an alarmist statement they said caused the entire column to be suspect. […]

What was supposed to be a non-typical deer hunt quickly turned into something completely different. Non-typical because we were hunting with handguns in the pursuit of a bit more challenge than the usual shoulder-mounted deer rifle and big-end scope. Turns out for a few minutes another quarry in the woods may have been stalking us. […]
Largemouth bass abound in Mississippi’s coastal rivers and marshes. Unfortunately, growth is slow, and fish over 3 pounds are rare. Why, in these food-rich systems where redfish grow to several pounds in their fist year of life, is slow growth of marsh largemouth a reality and large bass a rarity? […]
This month, the big smallmouth start suspending off bluff banks and holding off bluff points at Pickwick Lake in northeast Mississippi. From the middle to the end of January is the best time to catch a trophy smallmouth at Pickwick. We catch these suspending fish on Smithwick Suspending Rogues and Mann’s Stone Jigs. Using those two lures, you should be able to catch smallmouth that weigh from 2 to 6 pounds each with some largemouths and spotted bass mixed in. […]
The state has just reworked Lake Bogue Homa, which is located east of Laurel off Highway 84. A grass and a lily-pad lake with cypress trees, Lake Bogue Homa is shallow — only 6- to 8-feet deep for the most part — and has a few small creeks running through it. I like to fish this lake in December because that’s when most of the bass relate to the creek channels, making the fish easy to find and catch. […]
Scott Sullivan of Gulfport is captain of a 30-foot boat for the Mexican Gulf Fishing Company in Pass Christian. On the back of his boat, he has three, 300-horsepower Yamaha engines, and he can blister the wind running out to blue water from Point Cadet in Biloxi. […]
Call them what you will — Appaloosa, goujon, yellow cat, shovelhead, mud cat or any of a half dozen other names — the flathead catfish is rightfully the king of the aquatic jungle. While they share some characteristics with blue and channel cats, they are, in many ways, a different breed of cat. […]
Is this your most challenging month for hunting? It is for Jim Harper of Vicksburg. […]
Can you believe it? With December, we’re reading the last chapter in the 2010 book. […]
The Magnolia Crappie Club has been around for almost 20 years. Entering our 19th season, MCC held its largest event ever this fall. This was a big deal in the world of crappie tournament fishing, and I’d like to tell you about it.

When you’re fishing on Mississippi’s Gulf Coast this month, you’ll catch numerous species of hard-fighting fish that also are delicious to eat. […]
I’m addicted to big spotted bass. They fight hard, they’re fun to catch and at this time of year, you often can catch a bunch of big ones — 2- to 5-pounders almost every day in November — at Bay Springs Lake.
