When Jennifer Mayfield of Madison was preparing to shoot her first buck, which happened to be a Yazoo County whopper, she didn’t have to calm her nerves so much as, well, those of her hunting partner. […]
When Hayden Kyle’s Christmas break started at Pontotoc Elementary School, he and his dad Jay began a quest to get the 8-year-old hunter his first trophy buck. […]
Delise Menotti of Vicksburg loves deer hunting to the extent of few women. From the start of bow season to the end of the final primitive weapon season, she eats, sleeps and dreams the sport.
She hunts as often as possible, usually with her husband Scott.
Heck, she even wrote a country music song about it, which includes these lyrics: “I’m huntin’ deer and my dear is huntin’ me. Gotta Boone and Crockett in my scope, said a prayer asked for hope and steadied my rifle for the shot.” […]
Emily Howard is an avid hunter, so she was a bit concerned in early December when she found that her old hunting rifle had a bad scope and a few other problems. So, Howard bought herself an early Christmas present – a .243 Ruger with a brand new scope.
The self-gifting paid off on Christmas Eve when Howard used the rifle to down an 11-point monster buck near Vaughan in Yazoo County. The buck had a green score of 152 and featured not only a kicker, but a non-typical drop tine. The inside spread measured 19 3/8 inches and had a base of 6 inches. The mighty buck weighed in at a whopping 245 pounds and was estimated to be 5 ½ years old […]
January 1 dawned dreary and rainy in Leake County, but that didn’t deter David Langford from going to the woods in search of a buck. After battling the rain and elements for a few hours without any luck, the discouraged hunter made a fateful decision to call it a day.
The Lena hunter decided to return home to watch his Mississippi State Bulldogs in the Gator Bowl — but that didn’t last long.
By the end of the day, he was back in his hunting stand and sending a bullet toward what turned out to be a 200-inch Buckmaster buck.
Following what is becoming an all-too-familiar plot of modern deer hunting, Taylor Chastain closed the book on a well-known buck’s story on Jan. 3 at Bozeman Farms in western Madison County.
It was the Bull Shark.
Chastain and the Bozemans had been watching the deer for three seasons. There are numerous trail cam photos dating back to 2010, when it finally achieved mature status, a close call from the 2011 archery season and sheds from both years. […]
Hard to decide the No. 1 reason why this particular buck, a massive main-frame 8-point, means so much to B.A.S.S. Elite Series angler Greg Hackney of Gonzalez, La.
The list is pretty long, beginning with the fact that fishing pro was sitting right beside his 12-year-old son Andrew when the younger Hackney pulled the trigger and knocked the big deer down.
Then there’s the buck’s green score, a whopping 165 3/8 inches as measured by a certified Boone & Crockett scorer — not bad for an 8-point with four stickers. […]
Jimmy Riley knows bucks. It’s his job, since he’s the head guide at Giles Island Hunting Club, one of the South’s premier outfitters, and a star on Mossy Oak’s “Deer Thugs” on the Pursuit Channel.
But even he was stunned at the antler dimensions of a Giles Island Buck killed Thursday (Dec. 20)by client Joshua Bruce of Alexandria, La.
“I measured him at 242 6/8 inches gross,” said Riley. […]
Beau Johnson, 15, of Madison, isn’t likely to forget his first hunt with a muzzle-loading rifle, which took place Dec. 8 in the woods of Yazoo County.
If the memory fades of sharing the morning with his dad Shane, or how the loud click of the safety on the borrowed gun actually helped him, or how he tripped in a mud puddle and fell down in his excitemet.
All he will have to do is look up on the wall and see the mount of his 164-inch Boone & Crockett (gross green score) 12-point with an extra main beam, and Johnson will remember everything. […]
Jerry Holloman neared the top of his elevated stand Dec. 1 and took one last step up when something went terribly wrong and his foot slipped and the unthinkable happened.
Holloman slipped off the stick ladder and plummeted to the ground, slamming the earth so hard that it broke bones and sent him into excruciating pain.
Joseph Holloman and his father Jerry drew out a muzzleloader hunt at Panther Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, and planned on having a good hunt and quality father and son time. […]
