Hosey, Davis win online contests

Jordan Davis earned top honors in the MS-Sportsman.com Deer of the Year contest for October, and will receive an Official Sportsman Gear prize package.

MS-Sportsman.com user Claude Hosey won the October edition of the monthly Trail Cam Contest handily, while Jordan Davis took the honors in the Deer of the Year competition.

Each winner will receive an Official Sportsman Gear prize package including a T-shirt, a decal and a one-year Mississippi Sportsman magazine subscription.

Hosey, known on the site as “Clause H.,” earned 91 percent of the votes cast. Patrick Simmons (psimmons) and James Spears (known by the same name on the site) split the other 9 percent of the vote.

Monthly winners will be chosen by MS-Sportsman.com users, with the grand prize winner being selected by users in February from each monthly winner.

Hosey’s winning shot came from a stand he hunted the very same day on which the camera captured the fine 8-point feeding.

“The picture was taken one hour before I got there,” the hunter said.

In the Deer of the Year contest, Davis captured 70 percent of the votes, with Scott Chapin (scott in hinds) and Daniel Cooke (huntingmandan) each earning 35 percent.

Davis, whose alias is jpdavis93081, killed the 131-inch 9-point pictured in his winning photo while hunting on Mahanna WMA on Oct. 18.

“At 7:45 (a.m.) this guy comes running out of now where, running circles around me,” Davis wrote. Why? I am not sure.”

The buck ran into a thicket, but quickly turned around and headed back toward the hunter at which time Davis gave a quick bleat.

“As soon as I did, he slowed just enough to look in my direction, and I let the arrow go at 37 yards,” he wrote.
