Wiggins archer arrows 150-class brute

Matt Renot passed on a 130-class buck just minutes before arrowing this 150-class 13-point while hunting Yazoo National Wildlife Refuge.

Matt Renot knew what walked the woods of Yazoo National Wildlife Refuge, so he’s set his standards for bucks at 130-class deer. He bested that Oct. 2 when he arrowed a massive 13-pointer that has been roughed out as high as 164 inches.

“I’m pretty proud of it,” said the Wiggins hunter, who goes by the screen name of “renot16.” “He’s not but 14 inches wide, but he’s so tall and massive that it makes up for it.”

However, the kill almost never happened because Renot almost shot a smaller buck.

“I passed a 9-point that would go about 130 the day before,” he said.

He had second thoughts the morning of Oct. 2 when the buck reappeared.

“I actually drew back on him three times,” Renot said.

However, the quality buck was headed out along a path leading directly to buddy Heather Boyd, tucked into a tree about 150 yards away.

“He turned and started walking right to here, so I let him go,” Renot explained. “I texted her that a big deer was headed her way, and when I hit the ‘send’ button I looked up and this deer was standing about 30 yards eating acorns.”

The hunter could actually hear the deer “popping” acorns, and he quickly eased into position.

“He was in a thick area, but he came on in,” Renot said. “I knew he was tall, and I saw the kicker coming off the left side, but I didn’t realize how massive he was.”

At 20 yards, Renot pulled do full draw.

“I finally got a shot on him at about 10 yards,” he explained.

The arrow busted through the front shoulder, and the deer bolted.

Renot immediately got on the phone to a second buddy, who was trailing a doe, to tell him to stay away. And as he was making the call he saw what he wanted.

“I watched the buck fall behind a tree,” he said. “I kind of got a little excited.”

That celebration resulted in his phone ringing, with Boyd wanting to know if he had shot.

“I told her, ‘I just stuck a bull,’” Renot said.

The buck field dressed at 180 pounds, and the rack was just massive. The plank-like beams held 9 main-frame points, with another four stickers.

The deer green scored between 157 and 164 inches.

Unfortunately for Boyd, the commotion over the kill apparently spooked the 9-pointer.

Boyd “never did get to see the 9-point,” Renot said. “She got a little mad at me.”
