12.6-pounder beats the 11.6 caught earlier in March
Remember that story on this website from early March about the new lake record 11.6-pound largemouth bass at Jeff Davis Lake?
Well, forget about it.
The record has already been set again, and a full pound was added. Randy Rushing of Osyka caught a 12.6-pound largemouth March 21 on the public lake near Prentiss. Jeff Davis Lake is part of the State Lake system operated and managed by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.
Fishermen should take note of the 100-acre lake’s productivity. Jeff Davis was closed in 2009 for repair and renovation to the water control structure. Work was completed in 2010, bass were restocked in May of 2011 and the lake reopened to fishing in 2013. It is conceivable that the original stocking class has at least four or five more years of growth ahead.
“That lake was completely drained, so this has to be a fish that was stocked,” said Larry Bull, assistant chief of fisheries for the MDWFP. “That’s a good growth rate.”
Bull also said that between the two records, a second bass weighing 11.6 pounds was caught that could have shared the record but the fishermen decided not to do so.
Another MDWFP State Lake record was set in March, when Tom Jacobs of Monticello caught a 2.4-pound crappie at 128-acre Lake Mary Crawford at Monticello.
“Each state lake maintains a list of record fish, and we encourage anglers to let us know if they believe their catch might be a new record,” MDWFP state lakes coordinator Jerry Brown said. Records are kept for largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, crappie and catfish. All potential record fish must be verified by a member of the MDWFP fisheries staff.
Anglers who break a record will receive a certificate from the agency and a copy will be displayed at the lake office.
