BFL tournament scheduled for Pickwick Lake

Hundreds of pros and co-anglers will descend on Iuka June 4 for a BFL tournament on Lake Wheeler.

Bass Fishing League event moved to Iuka from Lake Ferguson due to Mississippi River flooding

The Bass Fishing League will stop at Pickwick Lake out of Iuka on June 4 for the third of five stops in the circuit’s Mississippi Division. The lake will be flooded with as many as 400 boaters and co-anglers for the event.

“Lower Pickwick is typically all off-shore ledge fishing,” FLW pro Jonathan Newton of Alabama said. “The spawn was pretty late this year so the fish are just starting to move out, and they have been pretty slow moving to deeper water.

“There are still a few bass that will be shallow, but I would target schooling fish in about 12-14 feet of water.”

BFL pros will be competing for a top prize of up to $9,500, while co-anglers will have as much as $3,000 on the table.

“The key is going to be finding the schooling fish and figuring out what they want to eat,” Newton said. “Crankbaits, jigs, Carolina Rig with a Zoom Brush Hog will be the baits to use

“I think it will take about 20 pounds to win this tournament.”

Takeoff and weigh-in will be at JP Coleman State Park located at 613 County Road 321 in Iuka. Takeoff is scheduled for 6 a.m. while weigh-in will begin at 2 p.m.

All events are free and open to the public.

The third Mississippi Division BFL tournament was originally scheduled to take place on Lake Ferguson but due to high water levels was moved to Pickwick Lake.
