No licenses need to fish this weekend as part of National Free Fishing Week celebration

No fishing licenses are needed this weekend to fish any public water in the state, so be sure to get out and catch your share of fish.

As part of National Boating and Fishing Week, Mississippi is offering fishing opportunities for all by allowing everyone to fish June 4-5 without a license on any public water in the state, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks announced.

“We encourage everyone to come out and take advantage of the great fishing opportunities, especially at our state lakes and state parks,” MDWFP’s Fisheries Bureau Director Ron Garavelli said. “Our hatcheries and biologists make sure that there are plenty of fish for everyone.”

Also on tap for the coming weekend is the 10th Annual Katfishin’ Kids Fishing Rodeo to be held at the fishing rodeo pond at the Turcotte Education Center on Hwy 43 just east of the Natchez Trace.

The rodeo is free and open to children 15 and under, and fishing activities run from 7-10:30 a.m.

Participants will walk through information stations on fish, fishing, casting and fishing and boating safety prior to fishing. Bait and tackle also will be provided.
