Biloxi man dies in coastal boating accident

Boat struck something in water in the Mississippi Sound, Biloxi Sun Herald reports

A 54-year-old Biloxi man died in a boating accident in the Mississippi Sound early this morning (Sept. 16), the Sun Herald reported.

Killed in the accident was Mark Barhanovich, according to the newspaper. Capt. Terry Harris of the Ocean Springs police, said investigators were told that two friends were fishing in the Sound near the islands when the boat in which they were riding struck something in the water that caused the motor to somehow flip into the boat, injuring one of the men.

Barhanovich was brought ashore and transported to Ocean Springs Hospital by Acadian Ambulance Service, but he was pronounced dead at 8 a.m., the paper quoted Jackson County Coroner Vicki Broadus as saying.

The ambulance crew and police officer met a boat at the docks near the Ocean Springs Harbor and were taken to the boat out in the Sound, where the accident occurred. The boat that transported the emergency crew was unrelated to the incident, police said.

The emergency crew responded, prepared Barhanovich, who was severely injured by his boat motor, and brought him back to shore, where he was then taken by ambulance to the hospital.
