MDWFP fisheries staff to offer free advice at Johnson State Park

To assist South Mississippi landowners with their private fishing holes, the Fisheries Bureau of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks will host a free pond management workshop July 15 at Paul B. Johnson State Park.

It will start at 6 p.m. at the Group Camp area, and begin with an hour-long presentation including pond design, fish stocking, harvest, vegetation control, liming and fertilization. A question-and-answer period will follow.

“This workshop will allow biologists and private pond owners the opportunity to discuss management options to improve fish populations and habitat,” MDWFP fisheries biologist Stephen Brown said. “We talk to people each year that want to manage their ponds effectively and this is a great way for us to provide how-to information that can help pond owners achieve their goals.”

Those interested in attending the workshop are asked to register by calling Brown at (601) 582-7721.
