Radio-collared female black bear found dead in Bolivar County

The remains of a female black bear were recently found in Bolivar County. The bear had been previously captured by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks in July 2010 and fitted with a global positioning system collar for research purposes.

According to data retrieved from the collar, MDWFP officials were able to determine the date and approximate time of death. Due to the endangered status of black bears in Mississippi, all bear deaths are thoroughly investigated by the MDWFP Enforcement Bureau.

“The death of any bear in Mississippi is a great loss, but losing a collared female represents an even more significant loss to future bear populations and research efforts,” MDWFP Bear Program Leader Brad Young said. “The bear population in Mississippi has made great strides in recent years; it’s unfortunate to have a setback such as this.”
