Blackstack, Dempster earn top prizes

Lloyd Dempster won the overall prize at the Big Buck Bounty contest with his monster 18-point Claiborne County buck.

2014-15 Big Buck Bounty sets records for entries and women

It is quite possible that some of the hunters who entered the 2014-15 Big Buck Bounty made a lot of noise when they killed the trophy deer that led them to the contest’s awards breakfast on March 28 at McClain’s Lodge in Fannin.

However, it is doubtful any screamed louder than John Blackstack of Brandon did when they called his number at the end of the breakfast.

Blackstack won a new Bad Boy Buggy, worth up to $12,000, presented by Ben Nelson Golf and Utility Vehicles.

“AW RIGHT,” Blackstack hollered.

It was the grand prize available to all who entered deer in the Big Buck Bounty, sponsored by U.S. 96.3 and Mississippi Sportsman magazine.

“I have never won anything before in my life, and now, I get this bad boy,” Blackstack said. “I can’t go around saying how unlucky I am. This is a blessing.”

He may have left with the day’s biggest prize, but Lloyd Dempster of Zachary, La., drove home with the biggest buck, already mounted, in his vehicle. Dempster won the overall prize with his Boone & Crockett Record Book of North American Big Game qualifier, a 197 7/8 non-typical 18-point killed in Claiborne County on Dec. 2.

Contest organizers from U.S. 96.3 FM and Mississippi Sportsman said the Big Buck Bounty had a record number of entries, 256, and that included the most female hunters to ever enter the event.

“We had over 25 women, including eight young girls, to enter, and I think that’s pretty good,” Big Buck Bounty organizer Nancy Fletcher Smith said. “We had a lot of great deer and we’ve got well over 100 hunters here today.”
