Voting begins in January edition of Deer of the Year, Trail Cam contests

This photo of Tra Clark with a 130-class buck is in the running for the final monthly Deer of the Year contest prize.

It’s time for MS-Sportsman.com users to choose the final monthly winners in the Nikon Deer of the Year and Trail Cam contests. The winner from each of these contests will move on to the final round of voting in which the grand prize winner will be announced.

Voting continues through noon Friday, with the grand prize round that will include all monthly winners beginning immediately thereafter. The winner in each contest will receive an Official Sportsman Gear prize package.

In the Deer of the Year contest, a photo uploaded by user hpalmer shows 10-year-old Jackson Palmer of Collinsville with a great New Year’s Eve 7-point.

The young hunter “passed up does all season long because he wanted his first deer to be a racked buck,” hpalmer wrote in his entry.

Van Clark (aka r clark) posted a photo of his son Tra (pronounced Trey) with a 130-class buck killed the day after Christmas.

“This is probably one of the top 25 deer from Lawrence County, as far as the Magnolia Record books goes,” Clark wrote. “I actually had a very close encounter with this deer in 2009 but couldn’t close the deal.”

Rounding out the contest is a photo submitted by Luke Seymour (aka seymour9), who killed a beautiful Covington County 8-point on Dec. 23 while hunting his buddy Josh.

“As daylight neared I began to hear what I was almost sure was a deer walking in the woods behind me. Few minutes later, a deer walked out,” Seymour wrote in his entry. “He was browsing in the lane on the edge of the cutover when he looked up and back into the woods. At that point I knew he was a deer and a big one.

“… (R)ight after I shot, I began to shake like a leaf.”

In the Trail Cam Contest, Brandon Conner’s “Eight Point in the backyard” is in the running for the monthly Sportsman Gear prize pack.

“Just an 8-point … that’s been coming up to the house,” wrote Conner (aka Deadeye79).

Justin Bankston (aka jkbankstn) also is in the running with an Oct. 14  trail-cam photo of a 170-inch buck he killed on Dec. 27.

“Great pic to capture and great motivation for the rest of the season!” Bankston wrote. “Excited to get (the) mount back and have (the) trail cam photo framed beside the mount!”

Scott Manning (spanky10012) uploaded “White Hen Turkey,” which is the third Trail Cam Contest submission included in the voting session. The image shows a beautiful white turkey in a flock of birds feeding in a food plot.
