Voting cranks up in Nikon Big Buck Photo, Trail Cam contests

MS-Sportsman.com user elroyhunter91 is one of the finalists in the December 2011 edition of the Nikon Big Buck Photo Contest.

Voting has begun to determine the winners of the December edition of the Nikon Big Buck Photo and Trail Cam contests.

This is the final voting round for the 2011 Trail Cam Contest, while the Nikon Big Buck Photo Contest continues through the end of the season. Voting continues through Thursday (Jan. 5), with winners announced Friday morning.

In the Nikon Big Buck Contest, four images entered into the contest in December were selected by site administrators.

Brand-new user “elroyhunter91,” who joined the site in mid December, made this month’s finals with a great photo of a 130-inch 8-point he killed while hunting in the coastal region of the state.

elroyhuner91 posed the deer in front of a slough, making the most of the photographic opportunity.

User “dusty_smith” joined the voting session with a photo of a 15-point he arrowed on Dec. 7 while hunting on Giles Island.

“This is (my) biggest buck to date,” dusty_smith wrote. “This 15-point gross scored in the 170s, with a 19 5/8 (inch) inside spread.”

Next up is Jamie Barnes’ photo of a great 8-point he shot on Christmas Eve while hunting in Hinds County.

Rounding out the voting session is a nice photo of a 260-pound 8-point killed by William Sprowles, who goes by “Hornhunter2” on the MS-Sportsman.com forum.

“His bases were 6 ½ inches in circumference,” Hornhunter2 wrote. “It is definitely the biggest-bodied deer I have ever killed. I had one trail (cam) picture of this (deer) about a month prior to shooting him.”

Site administrators also chose four finalists in the season wrap-up of the 2011 Trail Cam Contest.

User “Rcketop,” who joined the MS-Sportsman.com forum just to enter the contest, made the finals with a wild photo showing a deer either jumping straight up or flying.

“Pic of a buck jumping VERY high straight up in the air – hence the name Superman!!” Rcketop wrote in his entry.

Not to be outdone, user slbgrt555 entered a photo showing a doe jumping over another deer’s back at a feed pile.

“Our deer do not waste time hanging around when the get full – no matter what’s in the way,” slbgrt555 wrote of the image he titled, “Gotta Run.”

User “Crash Test Dummy” entered a photo showing the lengths to which bucks will go to leave their scent.

He named the photo “Dancing buck leaf licking and working his scrape.”

The final choice is a cool shot of a three-beamed buck entered by long-time member “mossyhorns.”

“On my hit list,” mossyhorns wrote.
