Apply for WMA youth dove hunts

The MDWFP considers dove hunting an excellent entry into the shooting sports for youngsters, and it will have two youth-only hunts on WMAs in September. The application process for those hunts opens today at mdwfp.com.

Only 50 openings at Black Prairie and 100 at Mahannah WMAs

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks will begin accepting applications today for youth dove hunts scheduled at two of its Wildlife Management Areas in September.

The first will be held Sept. 5 at the Black Prairie WMA near Brooksville in Lowndes County, and will be limited to 50 youth aged 15 and under.

The second will be held Sept. 10 at Mahannah WMA just off Highway 61 near Redwood in Warren and Issaquena counties, and it is open to 100 youngsters aged 15 and under.

A parent or guardian over 21 years of age must accompany each youth hunter during the entire hunt. Youth hunters must check in the day of the hunt at 11 a.m. The hunt will begin at 2 p.m. and conclude at sunset. Special events during the day of the hunt will include skeet shooting, and safety discussions by MDWFP Conservation Officers. Lunch will be provided.

Online registration for these two hunts will begin Monday (Aug. 1). Visit mdwfp.com to register.
