Looking for an opportunity to introduce a young person to hunting? The MDWFP is partnering with the Mississippi Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks Foundation to host 6 youth squirrel hunts across the state on Feb. 3, 2024. Application deadline is Jan. 26, 2024. Youth will also have the opportunity to learn about the role of hunting in wildlife conservation, hunting ethics, and firearm safety.

Where: 6 locations throughout Mississippi
Cost: Free (Guns and Ammunition provided)
Availability: 20 youth participants per event
Application Deadline: January 26, 2024
Youth must be 10 to 15 years of age (on event date) to participate. If submitting applications for multiple youth, please submit individual applications for each youth.
Copiah County WMA is at capacity. You may still select it as your primary location, and MDWFP will place applicants in spots that may come available as cancellations may occur before the event date. You may choose a suitable secondary location if available, and MDWFP will place you there.
Hunt sites will be:
- Camp McCain (Grenada County/Grenada area)
- Copiah County WMA (Copiah County/Hazlehurst area)
- Divide Section WMA (Tishomingo County/Iuka area)
- Pascagoula River WMA (Jackson County/Vancleave to Lucedale area)
- Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee NWR (Oktibbeha, Winston, Noxubee counties/Starkville area)
- Tallahala WMA (Scott, Newton, Smith, Jasper counties/Forest area)
Events will begin in the afternoon, and the general program after checking in and completing any necessary paperwork will be:
- Hunting basics and firearms safety
- Practice shotgun shooting
- Squirrel hunt with treeing dogs
- Field dressing squirrels
- Supper
A liability waiver completed by parent/guardian will be required to participate, and an adult parent/guardian is required to accompany youth during the event. The waiver may be submitted on the day of the event. If the first choice hunt site applied for is full, MDWFP will try to accommodate with the second choice, if available. Events will be mostly held outdoors for the duration (approximately 2 – 7 pm). Event staff will supervise all shooting and hunting activities.
