Spring is great time for hunting-camp work days

Maintenance of hunting stands, shooting lanes, hunting equipment done while temperatures are low.

Spring is when many outdoorsmen turn their thoughts to turkey hunting or fishing, with the relatively cool weather making time in the field a real joy. One of the last things we often think about is getting ready for the next deer-hunting season, but this is one of the best times of the year to get a lot of work done well in advance of the season.

It’s mid April here in Southern Mississippi, close to Woodville, and I got to thinking about all the things that we hunters have to do getting ready for the hunting season. We’ve got maintenance on all kinds of equipment, whether it be tractors, whether it be bikes, maintenance on a camp, trucks, just hunting gear and stuff like that, making sure we have our guns sighted in and our bows ready, whatever your fancy.

It’s also the time of year to put lime in food plots to ensure it has time to break down and really improve the growth of the seeds we plant in the fall.

I thought about how much more I can get done when the temperature is a little bit lower. I don’t handle the heat very well, you know; 105 degrees, 100 degrees out there and trying to plant, that’s about all I can stand.

So I got to thinking about all the stands I need to set out, all the pruning that I needed to get done. I just wanted to talk about all the things I’m doing in preparation for the season that’s coming up.

Be sure to watch the attached vid to see how I’m spending the spring at the camp.
