Youth gamebird field day set for June 12

A free youth gamebird field day will be held at Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge’s Larry Box Education Center in Brooksville from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks announced.

The field day, which is being hosted by the Oktibbeha Chapter of Quail Unliimted and the National Wild Turkey Federation’s Oktibbeha County Chapter, is open to those aged 8 through 18. Parents and guardians are encouraged to accompany youth.

Participation in this event is limited, so call 601.432.2199 to reserve your spot.

The field day will include a lunch, an introduction to Quail Unlimited and the National Wild Turkey Federation, a session on the basics of quail/turkey biology and management by an MDWFP biologist, a session on how hunting plays a role in management, an introduction to the 4-H Shooting Sports Program, firearms safety, a bird dog demonstration, archery instruction and shooting, and shotgun patterning (shotguns/ammo provided).

Participants are also encouraged to bring their favorite hunting photos to take part in a youth photo contest. Categories for the contest will include best hunting photo (photo of the youth hunting or with game) and best family hunting photo (photo of the youth and family member(s)). Prizes will be awarded to winners in both categories.
